Toews had a goal and four helpers over eight postseason appearances in his rookie year, to go with 18 points in 48 regular-season games. The fourth-round pick from 2014 made himself a fixture on the Islanders' blue line from the end of December onward, and should continue to evolve in 2019-20, having already shown some offensive skill.

Toews was impressive in the Islanders' sweep of the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs. He had two assists, both on the power play, and a rating of plus-2 in the four games versus Pittsburgh.

EDGE Analysis

Some might have been worried that the rookie would be a deer in headlights playing against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but that was not the case as Toews and the entire defensive unit of the Islanders played well above expectations. The power-play points are also a telling sign, as Toews should be a mainstay on the team's top power-play unit for the remainder of these playoffs and into next season. With Toews and several top defensive prospects, the Islanders' defense may continue to be one of the best in the NHL for years to come.

The Islanders have seven legitimate NHL defenders for six starting spots and although Toews is a rookie, he hasn't been the one chosen to be a healthy scratch in any game. Toews has solidified himself as a top four defender with room to grow. Toews should be a mainstay on the blueline for the Isles for years to come.

Toews will be reassigned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday and then immediately recalled, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Plenty of these type of moves will be made as teams look to keep their younger players eligible for AHL playoffs. In the case of Toews, the rookie blueliner will be sent down to the Islanders' AHL affiliate so he can participate in playoffs if need be, but he'll return to New York almost immediately and continue playing at the top level until further notice.
