David Savard has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Savard had five goals and 26 assists in 60 AHL contests last season. He also has two goals and 10 points in 35 career NHL games.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have sent David Savard back to the minors. Savard was returned as Adrian Aucoin was healthy enough to play after missing a couple of games. Savard was minus-three for the Blue Jackets in four games this season.

David Savard will suit up Thursday night. He will fill in for Nikita Nikitin, who has a lower-body injury, when the Blue Jackets play on the road against Los Angeles. Savard has no points and a minus-3 rating in three games this campaign, so he probably won't get much ice time.

Savard only had 18 penalty minutes in 72 AHL games in 2010-11 but his total jumped to 88 last season as he had 16 PIMs in 31 games with the Blue Jackets and 72 in 44 AHL games. Do not expect this trend to continue in the NHL as Savard is an offensively savvy defenseman and not a bruiser. He has a chance to stick with the Blue Jackets as a sixth or seventh blueliner in 2012-13 but would be better served by playing big minutes in the minors as he is still only 21.

He is only 21 so he has a nice future ahead of him with the Blue Jackets. While we can't recommend him next season, he could be a solid blueliner in the years to come.
