David Jones might have had the worst night of any Colorado Avalanche player on Wednesday, as the team was flattened 3-0 by the Vancouver Canucks. The only bright side of Jones' season is that he made his one measly point (a goal) count: it was a power-play game-winner. Overall, he has a mediocre 10 shots on goal and a -5 rating. Many questioned Colorado's decision to pay him big money during the offseason and he's doing little to dispute those questions.

David Jones considered the lockout an "emotional roller coaster." "You just never knew what would happen," he said. "One week you're going hard and thinking about a season, and the next you're hearing that talks have broken off and you kind of dial things back down. Hopefully it's something we don't have to go through again." Given the length of the CBA, we won't know the answer to that question for quite some time. In the short term, Jones' focus will be on living up to the four-year, $16 million contract he inked over the summer.

After scoring 47 goals over the last two seasons, David Jones thinks he can take his game to the next level. "We had a lot of success after we brought Jamie McGinn in and our line (with Paul Stastny) really clicked," Jones said. "We were on fire after the trade deadline. I don't think there's any reason why, if we're together during the upcoming year, that we can't put up some good numbers and really help our team." Jones had five goals and nine points in 18 games following the McGinn trade. We could see him doing a bit better in 2012-13, but we don't expect a huge jump in production.

David Jones has inked a four-year, $16 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche, according to an NHL source. His production slipped a bit in 2011-12 after he produced 27 goals and 45 points in 77 contests. Jones ended up with 20 markers and 37 points in 72 games this past season. He also tied rookie Gabriel Landeskog for the team lead with five game-winning tallies.

The Colorado Avalanche would like to re-sign David Jones. Jones is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Avalanche and Jones' agent, Ross Gurney have engaged in preliminary discussions. Jones also has an interest in staying with the Avalanche, but of course both sides still need to agree on a salary. Jones earned $2,500,000 in 2011-12.

David Jones, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is interested in staying with the Colorado Avalanche. "It's unfortunate they don't do any of their signings during a season," Jones said. "Which is fine, and just something you have to adjust to. But you can't really think about that too much right now. We still have games to play and have a hope we can make the playoffs." Even if Colorado wins both of their remaining games, they still aren't likely to make the playoffs. Jones has 19 goals and 36 points in 70 games this season.

David Jones had eight shots on goal in a 1-0 loss Wednesday. Colorado has just three games left in their regular season schedule. They are two points out of a playoff spot, but they have also played in two more games than the eighth place San Jose Sharks. In other words, it would a fair amount of help for the Avalanche to make the playoffs, even if they win all three of their remaining contests.

David Jones either improved his chances of staying in Colorado or his trade value in the process as he produced three points in the Avalanche's 5-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Jones scored two goals and an assist to push his 2011-12 points total to 20. That's still a pretty disappointing output for a player who seemingly had a breakout 27-goal season in 2010-11, but perhaps he simply overachieved last season.

Don't be surprised if the Colorado Avalanche end up trading David Jones. The Avalanche still have a shot of making the playoffs, but they've been slipping in the standings and Jones will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Jones is having a subpar season, which is sure to hurt his value, but he's still capable of serving as a second or third liner on a playoff contender. He's a name to keep in mind as we approach the trade deadline.

Colorado will make David Jones a healthy scratch on Thursday night. Kevin Porter will take his place in the lineup against Minnesota. Jones hasn't record a point in his past six games and he has recorded just two goals over his last 19 contests.
