Winnik was in camp on a professional tryout before signing a one-year deal Wednesday. With the ink on his contract still drying, the Ontario native needed to quickly establish a work visa in order to be eligible to play. The 32-year-old will join fellow veteran and new addition Matt Cullen on the Wild's fourth line.

Winnik may not be able to resolve his visa issues in time for Thursday's road match with the Red Wings.

There's apparently still hope that he can get cleared, but it's a race against time for the Wild newcomer at this point. Winnik joined training camp with Minnesota and ended up signing a PTO just Wednesday. Prepare alternatives in fantasy in case the winger isn't eligible to play.

The 10-year NHL vet joins his eighth team after winning a spot while playing on a professional tryout contract during training camp. Winnik brings experience, penalty killing ability, and is coming off a 2016-17 campaign that saw him score a career-high 12 goals. From that sense, Minnesota appears to have gotten a great bargain in adding Winnik to their lineup, though from a fantasy standpoint, he won't be much of a factor outside of the deepest of leagues.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 206 pounds, Winnik brings size up front, but he'll almost assuredly claim a bottom-six role if he latches on with the Wild following the tryout. The Journeyman played with the Capitals last season and notched 25 points in 72 regular-season games, but he put up goose eggs in the box score over 13 playoff contests, and now has just three assists for his only points over 58 career matches when it matters the most.

Winnik scored a goal with a plus-1 rating, six shots on goal and a minor penalty in Friday's 6-3 loss against the Coyotes.

Winnik has 12 goals this season, and three of them have come against the Coyotes in two outings. He and his fantasy owners wish the Caps played Arizona more, as Winnik really seems to get fired up facing his former organization.

Despite the multi-point effort he still has just seven goals and 10 assists this season. He isn't someone you'll want to rely upon regularly outside of the deepest fantasy pools since he generally sees bottom-six minutes and very little power-play work.

The brawny veteran is up to six goals and six assists in 34 games, and he's skated to a plus-13 rating -- that's what you call efficiency for a fourth-liner. Being on a team with a plus-44 goal differential certainly helps his cause.

Winnik scored a second-period goal and took a minor penalty during Wednesday's win over the Bruins.

EDGE Analysis

It's been a quiet start to the season for Winnik (four goals and six points through 17 outings), and the 31-year-old veteran doesn't move the fantasy needle at this stage of the game. Winnik is best left to the waiver wire in seasonal leagues, and unless he climbs the depth chart and plays more consistent offensive minutes, he's not a viable option in daily contests.
