It's be a disappointing season for Schneider. He entered Tuesday's game with an uncharacteristic .910 save percentage, 2.71 GAA and just 14 wins. After posting a .924 save percentage and 2.14 GAA through his first three seasons with New Jersey, expecting a bounce-back stretch to finish the year isn't out of the question. However, Schneider and the Devils have shown very little reason to bank on a midseason turnaround.

After being yanked in the first period of the Devils' loss to the Kings on Jan. 24, Schneider turned in a perfect 18-save relief appearance against the league-leading Caps on Thursday. Just when things were starting to go well for Schneider with five straight games of .912 save marks or better, he turned in this dud -- made worse by Keith Kinkaid's strong relief appearance (13 saves on 13 shots). Schneider's actually been rather thoroughly outperformed by his backup in terms of both GAA and save percentage, but the Devils don't seem too inclined to make a change in the playing time here as long as their No. 1 remains healthy.

It'd be nice to say that he outdueled Devan Dubnyk, who entered play with the NHL's best ratios, but it's more like Schneider was less mediocre. Nonetheless, his two consecutive wins and five straight outings with save marks of .912 or better are both highly positive signs for a guy whose season came off the rails throughout November and December.
