Ruhwedel was one of five players assigned to AHL Rochester on Monday to finish the season. Ruhwedel has emerged as a capable top-four defenseman in the AHL, and will make a run for a roster spot with the Sabres next year.

Ruhwedel has been called up from AHL Rochester in light of Andre Benoit's lower-body injury, reports WGR 550. This will be Ruhwedel's second stint with the Sabres after scoring 34 points in 69 games with AHL Rochester. The dependable two-way defenseman filled in seamlessly in his two previous games with the big club, scoring an assist and finishing with a plus-2 rating. Benoit will not play Friday and is doubtful for Saturday.

Ruhwedel will likely be re-assigned back to AHL Rochester with Andrej Meszaros (hand) returning, reports John Vogl of The Buffalo News. Ruhwedel was the No. 6 defenseman on the Sabres depth chart and averaged less than 13 minutes in two games, though he was quite productive with an assists, three shots on goal, five hits and two blocked shots. Zach Bogosian (lower body) is not expected to play Friday but the Sabres are carrying enough defenseman and would probably like Ruhwedel to play 20 minutes for AHL Rochester instead. Ruhwedel will make a run for a regular roster spot next season.

Making his 2014-15 NHL debut, Ruhwedel's point was the second of his career through 29 contests. The 24-year-old was recalled from AHL Rochester earlier Monday with both Zach Bogosian and Andrej Meszaros nursing injuries, so his stay with the parent club will likely last as long as his fellow defensemen remained sidelined.

In 28 career NHL games he has one assist, so the upside for Ruhwedel is minimal, especially this season with the Sabres being the league's worst team. Ruhwedel may get some time on special teams but won't be a huge factor in either. Ruhwedel's call-up comes with Mark Pysyk (heart) and Zach Bogosian (lower-body) considered day-to-day.

Ruhwedel was one of 11 cuts the Sabres made on Friday. Ruhwedel was in a training camp battle for a spot on the team's third pairing but ended up being among the Sabres' first cuts. A two-way defenseman who signed as an undrafted player out of UMass-Lowell, Ruhwedel appeared in 21 games for the Sabres and 47 games for Rochester. He was among the Amerks' top defenseman, notching 28 points during the season and five points in five games in the playoffs. The 24-year-old will be among the Sabres' first call-ups should the need arise.

Chad Ruhwedel suffered a concussion when he was hit by Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo at the 4:29 mark of the third period on Sunday. Rinaldo has a hearing scheduled for Monday for the play. "Those are the type of hits that we have to get rid of," coach Ted Nolan said. "Those are not only dangerous hits but you're also putting a fellow player in jeopardy of his career. Head injuries, concussions, we all know how serious they are and we still have guys with flying elbows going directly to the head." Ruhwedel has one assist and a minus-3 rating in 21 games with the Sabres this season.
