Austin Watson netted a marker but Milwaukee came up short in its 3-2 overtime loss to Texas on Wednesday night. At 20, Watson is regarded by scouts as a a very good defensive forward, but one who doesn't have a very high offensive ceiling. In the AHL, though, he's showing he has some scoring punch to provide, too, with eight goals and seven assists in 20 games.

The Nashville Predators are looking at Austin Watson as a versatile forward who can put up around 40-plus points when he's ready for NHL play. "He's so versatile that we can use him anywhere," assistant GM Paul Fenton said. "We can put him in a checking role. We can put him in a higher role where he's on your top two lines. We can put him on the power play. Defensively, he is so responsible with his game from what we saw when we drafted him, and he's getting physically bigger and stronger every day." Watson has seven points in 12 games with the Milwaukee Admirals in his rookie AHL year.

Watson now has a three game point streak going with 2 goals and 2 assists in the past four days. After being held pointless in the first three games of his rookie AHL season, Watson has notched 7 points in his last nine games. The 20-year-old American who Nashville drafted in the first round of the 2010 draft scored 68 points in 61 OHL games last year.

Predators top prospect Austin Watson is expected to get his first taste of pro hockey this season as he joins the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL. Watson was Nashville's first round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, but has since played in the OHL where he has proven his ability to excel at that level. This season will be his first in the AHL and he hopes to use the opportunity to help shed the reputation of an underachiever he earned after he was cut from the U.S.world junior team last year. The presence of NHLers Ryan Ellis and Gabriel Bourque on the Admirals roster could certainly help the development process.

The Predators hope that Austin Watson is starting to tap into his potential. The forward was a 2010 first-overall draft selection and played with Peterborough of the OHL after he was drafted. Even though he had 68 points in 68 games in the 2010-11 season, he failed to make the U.S. world junior team and left a lot to be desired in his development. He focused on getting into better shape last offseason, tallied 33 points in 32 games and was then traded to the London Knights, where his development reached a new level. He had 10 goals during the playoffs after notching 35 points in the regular season with the club. "You talk to his coaches and talk to the people who were around him in London, they see a kid who was determined and had some leadership qualities," said Martin Gelinas, the Preds director of player development. "He was also a difference maker on the ice too." Watson is expected to begin next year in the AHL.

Nashville prospect Austin Watson spent two weeks this summer living with former NHL veteran Martin Gelinas. Gelinas works as director of player development for the Predators, so he helped whip Watson into shape with on- and off-ice workouts as well as proper nutrition and yoga. "He's a talented young man," Gelinas said. "We want to give him a good chance. We'd like to do it with everyone; it's just hard to do it with everyone. For summer I believe for a young guy, June, July and August is where you can really build as a player." Watson will likely return to junior for this season, but he probably gained some valuable experience in the process.
