Tuesday was Niemi's first game action since joining the Pens in the offseason and it was not the type of outing to instill confidence in fantasy owners or fans. If Pittsburgh is going to pull off the three-peat, it's going to be on the back of No. 1 Matt Murray.

Niemi will make his first appearance in the Black and Gold after signing with the Pens during the offseason. The netminder went 12-12-4 with a 3.30 GAA in 37 outings with Dallas and will serve a the backup for Pittsburgh during the upcoming campaign. The 34-year-old will man the crease in the first two periods before being replaced in the third by Casey DeSmith.

Niemi signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Penguins on Saturday.

The Finnish tender has fallen from grace over the years, with his two-year tenure with the Stars including extremely weak peripherals (2.92 GAA, .900 save percentage), not to mention that he only recorded three shutouts in 85 games over that span. Still, he is a former Stanley Cup champion who lifted Lord Stanley's chalice with the Blackhawks in 2010, and there's very little risk to the two-time defending champs in acquiring him based on the short length of his new deal and the fact that he'll be paid the Average Joe's equivalent to pennies on the dollar. With Marc-Andre Fleury courted by the Golden Knights in late June, Niemi will be the No. 2 goalie behind Matt Murray in the upcoming season.

The Dallas Stars have bought out the final year of Niemi's contract.

Niemi has become a free agent. Though, it remains to be seen what kind of job he'll get now. Reports indicated the Stars had trouble finding a trade partner, so there might not be much work out there for the 33-year-old netminder. He finished last season with an .892 save percentage through 37 games.

Niemi was waived by the Stars on Monday and will be bought out of his remaining contract if he goes unclaimed, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

EDGE Analysis

Upon the Stars trading for the rights to Ben Bishop back in May, the expectation was that Niemi was going to be reduced to a backup role at best in the coming season. Now, Dallas is looking to get rid of the goaltender all together in waiving him Monday morning. While it's unlikely, should a team claim Niemi off waivers, the Stars would be free and clear of his cap hit.

The Stars traded for the rights to Ben Bishop on Tuesday, signaling Niemi is at best a backup next season.

Whether or not the team is able to sign Bishop to a new contract, it's a signal that general manager Jim Nill is no longer happy with the Niemi and Kari Lehtonen tandem. Niemi's value would plummet if Bishop signs a deal with Dallas.

Niemi was pulled from Thursday's start against the Predators after yielding two goals on eight shots.

Niemi allowed two goals in each of his last two starts, but coach Lindy Ruff may have sensed a long night ahead and that's precisely what it was for the Stars, who have been a mess defensively and between the pipes for most of the season. Kari Lehtonen replaced Niemi in this latest contest, only to watch the puck travel past him five times on 28 shots. The Stars will bid adiue to their 2016-17 campaign with a home clash against the Avalanche on Saturday.

Niemi will guard the cage in Thursday's home game against the Predators.

Niemi was solid in his last start Tuesday against Arizona, stopping 24 of the 26 shots he faced en route to a 3-2 overtime victory. The Finnish netminder will look to stay dialed in and pick up his 13th win of the season in a middling home matchup with a Predators club that's averaging 2.54 goals per game on the road this season, 15th in the NHL.

Niemi allowed just two goals on 26 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime win against the Coyotes.

EDGE Analysis

Niemi has been poor on the road and surprisingly decent at home, posting a 10-4-2 record at American Airlines Center. The good news for his fantasy owners and DFS players is that both of the remaining games for the Stars are on home ice.

That said, the 2010 Stanley Cup champion will face a tough test Tuesday as he'll be running into a scorching Jets team that's won seven of their last nine games.
