Niemi led his team to the ice for warmups and will be the starting goalie for Tuesday night's showdown in Winnipeg, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Niemi gets the nod after three straight starts from Kari Lehtonen, but neither goalie has been good recently. Niemi's last win came on Jan. 17 but he managed to allow six goals and get pulled from that game. It might not get better for the 33-year-old keeper Tuesday, as the Jets currently rank 10th in the NHL with 2.83 goals per game.

Niemi allowed three goals on 34 shots in a 3-1 loss Tuesday to Toronto.

It was just Niemi's third start since Jan. 17, a span of nine games. He was terrible in getting pulled his last time out against Buffalo (two goals on five shots), and is stuck on just 10 wins in 28 appearances to go with an ugly 3.20 GAA and equally lackluster .901 save percentage. Fellow Finnish netminder Kari Lehtonen hasn't been much between with marks of 2.89 and .902 -- as well as 11 wins in 36 outings -- so there appears to be no end in sight to the goalie carousel in Big D in the season's final two months.

Niemi will defend the net for Tuesday's road game against the Maple Leafs.

EDGE Analysis

To say Niemi's play has been bad recently would be something of an understatement -- over his last three starts, he's allowed 11 goals on 36 shots for a horrific .694 save percentage over that span. He was pulled from the goal in all three of those starts. It's difficult to recommend the 33-year-old as a fantasy starter, especially against a Toronto team that ranks sixth in the league with 3.12 goals per game.

Niemi registered a win in his previous start but allowed six goals on just 28 shots, and backed up Kari Lehtonen for the next three games before getting another chance against Buffalo. It may be tough to imagine, but Niemi's been even worse this season with an ugly 3.20 GAA and .900 save percentage, both of which are the worst totals of his career. He's under contract for one more year with the Stars, but it's tough to see how many more of his poor starts they can stomach. Neither Dallas goalie is particularly reliable, but Lehtonen has usually been the better option this season. Niemi is a dicey play even against weak teams, so he only has value for fantasy owners who need a handcuff for Lehtonen.

As expected, Niemi will tend twine as Thursday's home starter versus the Sabres, NHL.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Nemo desperately needs to find his game, as he was pulled from each of his last two starts before ceding the net to Kari Lehtonen for the three contests that followed. The Finn will bring a lowly .902 save percentage into this next match, which is the lowest rate of his career in which he's made more than 20 starts. We'd be a little skittish about starting him against the Sabres, as they have shown tremendous resolve by ratting off three consecutive wins in overtime and netting 11 goals in that span.

Niemi is expected to start Thursday against Buffalo, reports Mark Stepneski of NHL.com.

Niemi's last couple starts have not gone well. He was pulled on Jan. 14 against the Wild after allowing three goals on three shots. Then he allowed six goals on 28 shots against the Rangers. Buffalo's offense is starting to wake up. Combined with Niemi's poor starts recently, he's not an alluring play.

This wasn't exactly a promising performance for Niemi on the heels of this weekend's zero-save performance against Minnesota. The Finnish veteran gave up a goal just 27 seconds into this game, but was fortunate to be bailed out by his offense and backup goaltender. Coach Lindy Ruff gave him the hook after he let the Rangers close a 7-3 deficit to 7-6 in the third period, with Kari Lehtonen's perfect relief work (12 saves) securing Niemi's win. With his GAA now up to a gross 3.16 and his save mark down to .902, Niemi's having his worst NHL season; as it has been all year, the main point in his favor is that Lehtonen's numbers are nearly equally awful.

Niemi will guard the blue paint in Tuesday's road matchup with the Rangers, Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Niemi had arguably his worst performance of the season his last time out, allowing three of three save chances before being pulled in a loss to the Wild on Saturday. Fresh off a maintenance day, the 33-year-old netminder will look for a bounce back showing against a Rangers offense that averages 3.41 goals per contest, second in the NHL.

Niemi entered the game 8-3-2 at home this season, but he clearly did not have it against the high-octane Minnesota offense. If head coach Lindy Ruff turns back to Niemi for Monday's game in Buffalo, a bounce back is possible. After that, the schedule isn't terribly favorable, including another home game against Minnesota looming Jan. 24.

EDGE Analysis

This will be the third consecutive start for Niemi, who has a winning record of 9-7-4, despite peripheral numbers that leave a lot to be desired -- 2.84 GAA and .912 save mark in 24 games. Anything can happen in the game of hockey, but we'd think twice about starting him in this contest, as the Wild are coming off a seven-goal explosion at the expense of stud Habs goalie Carey Price on Thursday.
