Given the heavy workload normally shouldered by starter Carey Price, owners probably shouldn't expect Niemi to see the crease with any sort of frequency. A 4.44 GAA on the year -- spread across three organizations -- makes the Finn a risky play, regardless of fantasy format.

The veteran netminder hasn't been great since joining the Canadiens in mid-November, compiling an 0-1-1 record while posting a 2.79 GAA and .918 save percentage in four appearances. He'll look to pick up his first victory of the campaign in a tough road matchup with a Washington team that's 18-6-0 at home this season.

Niemi made 31 saves in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Edmonton. He allowed three goals.

Niemi was solid Saturday, but his Hab-mates didn't do much to help. He just doesn't get enough starts behind Carey Price to make him a viable fantasy option.

This was Niemi's first appearance in eight games as Price had monopolized the starts, showing Vezina Trophy form since his return from a lower-body injury. Unfortunately for the Habs on Saturday, Price's form was more like the goalie that went 3-7-1 with a 3.77 GAA we saw earlier this season.

Niemi gave up two goals on 33 shots in Wednesday's shootout loss to the Predators.

Niemi was making his first start for the Canadiens, as this is already the third team he's been with this season. The veteran may be sporting an awful .845 save percentage, but he actually looked very good Wednesday and helped Montreal earn a point. Niemi has slid into the backup role with Carey Price (lower body) and Al Montoya (concussion) on the sidelines, but it's hard to be optimistic about his fantasy value given his lackluster play this season. Youngster Charlie Lindgren is emerging for the Habs and we'll need to see more consistency from Niemi before recommending him as a spot start.

Niemi will start on the road against the Predators on Wednesday.

Get your Predators ready. Niemi is the fourth-string goalie for the Canadiens, and Montreal is already his third team of the season. The Canadiens are on the second night of a back-to-back, and Niemi has a 6.66 GAA and a .820 save percentage this season. This one could get ugly.

Niemi made his Montreal debut Saturday in relief. He allowed one goal on four shots in 11 minutes of work.

Somehow, despite a 6.74 GAA and .814 save percentage, Niemi keeps avoiding a potential demotion to the minors after getting claimed by his second team this season. The news has been encouraging regarding the return of Carey Price (lower body), so this move seems to indicate that Al Montoya (concussion) could be out for a while. Given the emergence of Charlie Lindgren, one has to wonder if the 34-year-old Niemi isn't headed for another waiver designation once the Habs' goalies get back to 100 percent.
