The 20-year-old rookie played in the season opener, but was sent down after one game for multiple reasons, according to Peter Baugh of The Athletic. The move was partially motivated by the salary cap; demoting Newhook allowed the Avs enough space to bring up three forwards rather than keeping him and calling up one other player. But the main reason is that the team doesn't feel he's ready for the NHL. "He has to go get a little bit of confidence because he looks like he's getting rid of the puck too early in a lot of situations," head coach Jared Bednar said. "He's been good positionally, but the work ethic has to go up with some of the battles, both offensively in order to play in the offensive zone and defensively in order to get out of the defensive zone." The Avs hope Newhook can develop through the course of the season and contribute at the NHL level come playoff time.
