Succop, who went 7-for-7 on field-goal attempts in Thursday's joint practice with the Dolphins, remains in a very close competition with the equally impressive Jose Borregales for the placekicker job, Andrew Crane of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The veteran and Borregales have typically been alternating days where they serve as the sole placekicker in practice, and each seemingly continues to run neck-and-neck with the other. Succop's perfect day Thursday followed a 6-for-7 performance by Borregales on Wednesday, but both kickers have had their share of unblemished and near-perfect efforts thus far. Succop seemingly enjoyed an advantage coming in due to his incumbent status, but if each player performs very similarly during preseason games, the fact Succop's cap hit of $4.5 million significantly outpaces Borregales' $870,000 figure could be the tiebreaker.

Succop, who dealt with an undisclosed offseason injury, has been participating fully in practice since the start of training camp and is attempting to hold off Jose Borregales for the starting placekicker job, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

The veteran's 83.3 percent accuracy on field goals last season left something to be desired, and his 70.0 percent success rate from 40-49 yards was his lowest in that range since 2014. Succop is therefore going to have to fight for his roster spot this summer, and although the 35-year-old did go a perfect 6-for-6 in Wednesday's practice, Borregales has gone a combined 14-for-16 himself over his first two kicking sessions.

With the Buccaneers' offense operating at near-peak efficiency, Succop was only called upon for one field-goal try. The seven-point tally wasn't much to write home about for fantasy managers rolling with Succop in postseason contests, but he could be afforded more field-goal opportunities when Tampa Bay goes up against the tough defense of either the Cardinals or Rams in next Sunday's divisional-round matchup.

Succop drilled field goals of 39 and 40 yards, missed a 46-yard attempt short and converted all five extra-point tries in the Buccaneers' 41-17 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

The 11-point effort to close out the regular season was a boon for fantasy managers rolling with Succop in any Week 18 championship games, and it qualified as his second double-digit point tally in the last three weeks. Succop's 46-yard miss did snap a streak of eight straight field-goal makes for the veteran, and the 83.3 percent success rate he finished with in that category qualified as his lowest in a full season since 2017. Nevertheless, the Buccaneers will hope the 35-year-old is as locked in during the upcoming postseason as he was during last season's championship run, when he went 9-for-9 on field-goal attempts and 12-for-13 on extra-point tries over four games.

The veteran kicker missed an opportunity at even more productive day when the Buccaneers went for two points following their final touchdown. Succop has now drilled six straight field-goal attempts to up his success rate in that category to 85.2 percent, inching him closer to the impressive 90.3 percent figure he posted during the team's championship 2020 season.

Succop connected on field-goal attempts of 36, 43, 21 and 48 yards and also made both his extra-point tries in the Buccaneers' 32-6 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

The 14 total points was a season high for the veteran and only his third double-digit tally of the campaign. Succop had been completely blanked on the stat sheet in the 9-0 loss to the Saints in Week 15, so to label Sunday's resurgence a particularly timely breakout is an understatement. Despite the favorable matchup for the Buccaneers' offense in Week 17 against the Jets, Succop may still be the beneficiary of multiple field-goal opportunities stemming from stalled drives, as Mike Evans (hamstring, reserve/COVID-19) may miss another contest and therefore leave Tom Brady with a thin receiving corps once again.

Succop missed his only kick, a 45-yard field-goal attempt, wide left in the Buccaneers' 9-0 loss to the Saints on Sunday night.

One would have gotten very good odds before the season on Succop suffering a blanking on the stat sheet, but that's precisely what unfolded Sunday night in a shocking shutout loss for the defending champions. One of several reasons for the significant struggles of the Buccaneers' offense against the Saints was the in-game injuries suffered by multiple key players, the most serious being Chris Godwin's season-ending ACL tear. With Tampa Bay set to operate short-handed to some degree for the remaining three games of the regular season, Succop could be the beneficiary in the form of a few more stalled drives than usual culminating in field-goal opportunities.

Succop drilled field-goal attempts of 23 and 24 yards and also made all three extra-point tries in the Buccaneers' 33-27 overtime win over the Bills on Sunday.

Succop was perfect on all kicks for the third time in four games, with his unblemished tally pushing his field-goal success rate back up to 85.0 percent. Succop has attempted well over two times more extra points than field goals due to the efficiency of the Buccaneers offense, but he retains plenty of upside going into a Week 15 divisional showdown against the Saints.
