Because the initial bonus payment can prorate over the contract's life if Mathis is released early on, the Colts are rolling the dice that Mathis has at least three big years left in him. Mathis, 31, tallied 9.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in 16 games last season. He will play more with his hand up in Indianapolis, perhaps in the Terrell Suggs role for Chuck Pagano's hybrid defense.
