The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Rams "remain interested" in free agent SS Quintin Mikell. If Mikell were to re-sign with the Rams it would "almost certainly" be as a backup, according to beat writer Jim Thomas. The Rams drafted SS T.J. McDonald in the third round of the draft, and Darian Stewart seems to be the favorite for the other safety spot. It's currently the weak spot of St. Louis' defense.

Coach Jeff Fisher says the Rams "have interest" in re-signing free agent SS Quintin Mikell. "We have interest," Fisher said. "He played very well for us last year. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year." Mikell was released two weeks ago after the two sides couldn't come to an agreement to restructure his $6 million salary. The Rams then whiffed on Louis Delmas in free agency, and the free agent crop has dried up since.

SS Craig Dahl is an impending free agent and is not expected to be re-signed. So, the Post-Dispatch says it's "possible - some say likely" that the Rams will be looking for two new safeties this offseason. Mikell had a fine season as an in-the-box safety, so he could be asked to restructure.

The Rams are expected to approach FS Quintin Mikell about restructuring his contract this offseason. As is the case with Steven Jackson, the Rams want Mikell back but only at a lower rate. Although Mikell had a fine season with 114 tackles, three sacks and forced four fumbles, his $6 million salary will count $9 million against the cap. Due $4 million, OT Wayne Hunter will have to restructure as well.

Mikell was knocked out of St. Louis' Week 5 Thursday night win over the Cardinals, but the extra rest enabled him to heal up without missing any practice time. In the second year of a four-year, $27 million deal, Mikell has 27 tackles through five games.

The Panthers have much greater needs than safety, but that hasn't stopped speculation that they will import a free agent at the position. They have also been linked to Eric Weddle, who played under coach Ron Rivera in San Diego. The Rams and the two Texas clubs may be more realistic options for Mikell.
