Shaughnessy was waived by the Saints on Tuesday, ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shaughnessy last played with the Cardinals during the 2014 season, as he opted to take a year off to get himself completely healthy. The Saints signed him earlier in August as a depth option on defense, but after an unimpressive preseason up to this point, the 29-year-old was let go Tuesday. A six-year NFL veteran, he may find some interest elsewhere prior to the season.

After a year out of football, Shaughnessy will reportedly sign with the Saints, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Shaughnessy last played for the Cardinals in the 2014 season. It is currently unclear what type of role the veteran OLB will have with the Saints. At just 29-years-old, Shaughnessy should enough gas left in tank to compete for a roster spot.

Shaughnessy has moved from outside linebacker to defensive end this offseason, the Cardinals' official site reports. "We can always stand him up in run defense if we want to do that," coach Bruce Arians said. "He gives us such good position flexibility. Get him inside and let him get back to his natural stuff." Before a knee injury limited Shaughnessy to eight games in a sack-free 2014 season, he racked up 18.5 across 67 contests in his first five professional seasons, shedding light on his pass-rushing prowess. Because he's struggled to keep his weight in relation to playing linebacker, according to Arians, the switch in positions appears logical and could push Shaughnessy into the fringes of the IDP landscape in the upcoming campaign.

Shaughnessy played 30 of 65 defensive snaps in his return to the field Sunday against the Chiefs, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports. However, he injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter, according to the Cardinals' official site, and was subsequently listed as limited in Monday's practice. Taking the field for the first time since Week 5, when he suffered a knee injury, Shaughnessy contributed three tackles, including two for loss. The lengthy absence from the lineup has delayed his first sack of the season, after racking up 18.5 in his first five years in the league, but with limited snaps perhaps on tap going forward, he may be blanked in the category for the first time in his career.

Shaughnessy (knee) is expected to take the field Sunday against the Chiefs, the Cardinals' official site reports. Sidelined since Week 5 due to a knee injury, Shaughnessy rebooted his involvement in practice on Nov. 20 and is poised to take over one of spots at outside linebacker. Before he can return, though, he must be activated from the ID/designated-to-return list, which will likely occur before drills commence Wednesday. While the Cardinals have racked up 18 sacks over the last four games, his pass-rushing prowess will still be a boon to the defense as they push for a playoff berth.

Shaughnessy has been placed on the Cardinals' injured reserve/designated to return list due to a knee injury, Darren Urban of azcardinals.com reports. Shaughnessy suffered knee cartridge damage during Sunday's loss to the Broncos and will now be sidelined for six weeks. His absence adds to the Cardinals' misfortune on defense, as coordinator Todd Bowles' starters have been ravaged by injuries throughout this season. Without Shaughnessy, Sam Acho could be promoted to start at strongside linebacker for Arizona moving forward.

The Patriots are hosting free agent OLB Matt Shaughnessy on a visit Wednesday. Shaughnessy took a one-year "prove it" deal in free agency a year ago and it paid off. He made the transition to 3-4 outside linebacker and recorded 36 tackles, three sacks, three fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups. Shaughnessy would add to an already solid outside linebacking corps in New England that features Jamie Collins and Dont'a Hightower.

The Cardinals and free agent OLB Matt Shaughnessy have engaged in contract negotiations. "They are actively trying to re-sign him," Shaughnessy's agent, Rich Rosa, said. "He wants to be there, so we'll see how it goes." Shaughnessy proved to be a versatile player for the Cardinals last season on a one-year deal. After playing defensive end and defensive tackle in Oakland, he was able to make the switch to 3-4 outside 'backer and was a quality edge setter versus the run.

Cardinals signed DE Matt Shaughnessy to a one-year contract. Shaughnessy is smartly taking a one-year, "prove-it" deal in an effort to rehab his value at age 26. Shaughnessy flashed legit Pro Bowl-caliber talent early in his career with Oakland -- specifically 2010 -- before a major shoulder injury wiped out his 2011 season and he returned less effective in 2012. If back to 100 percent, Shaughnessy could end up as the Cardinals' starting right defensive end. Bruce Arians promises to use Darnell Dockett inside more moving forward. Calais Campbell is Arizona's all-world left end, or "five technique."

Free agent DE Matt Shaughnessy will visit the Titans on Friday. That's if Shaughnessy makes it out of his Thursday night visit with the Cardinals. One of the better defensive ends left on the market behind all the aging veterans, Shaughnessy can play both end and tackle in a 4-3. He has 15.5 career sacks in four seasons.
