Rankings Retrospective: Tight Ends fantasysharks.com Wed 7/30/14 5:00 AM

In the finale of this series we will take a look at how that pricy fantasy football magazine did projecting the tight end position last year. If you have read any of the other retrospectives, you know that up to this point they haven't done very well. As far as the tight ends, the results were about the same. They came in at a (now) predictable 50 percent for the position group, so five of the consensus top 10 actually finished within the top 10 at year's end. Dennis Pitta, a likely top 10 performer, was hurt in training camp and missed the whole year. Rob Gronkowski , Kyle Rudolph and Owen Daniels also missed large chunks of time as well. The thing about the projections for this position that screams off the page is the fact that Aaron Hernandez was the No. 3 rated tight end! I don't even need to comment about the timing of these rags, an example like that says it all. By the way, can you believe that was only a year ago? It seems much longer. I was surprised to see that the famous quote "It's not about the X's and the O's, It's about the Jimmy's and the Joe's," isn't attributed to anyone specifically. The (great) quote is used so frequently I was certain that some coach uttered it and got the credit for one of the game's better sayings. Apparently not, but I digress on that topic. When it comes to the tight end position, it is all about the Jimmy's and the Joe's. Or in this case just Jimmy (Graham). I won't bore you with the obvious analysis about how Graham finished first by more that 50 points versus the field. I certainly won't bore you talking about his season that was 30 percent more productive than Vernon Davis, who finished a not close second. And I absolutely won't waste your time with rudimentary statements about the likelihood of an encore performance this year. We all know those facts and expect similar results this season. The real question is, "Can you pull the trigger on a tight end in the late first round?" I can hurl (spew, vomit and barf also came to mind) statistics at you all day long to drive home the point that Graham is the best tight end, by far. That would be missing the point, though. The above referenced question is the most meaningful one in this situation. Barring injury, we all expect Graham to once again be the best at his position by a large margin. So it comes down to a personal choice, if you hold a pick in the 7-12 range in the first round, are you willing to forgo a top quarterback or wide receiver, or ...

The Fantasy Impact of Four Coaching Changes fantasysharks.com Tue 7/29/14 8:00 AM

Coaching is one of the biggest aspects that often tends to get overlooked prior to your fantasy football draft. Last year, Philip Rivers had an excellent season with Ken Whisenhunt as the offensive coordinator. Now that Whisenhunt is gone, Rivers will most likely see his numbers decrease, and as a result, be overdrafted in fantasy leagues. Below are four coaches who changed teams that should impact their new teams whether positively or negatively. Jay Gruden, Washington Last season Gruden was the offensive coordinator for Cincinnati. I think Gruden is one of the best playcallers in the NFL as he has made Andy Dalton look a hundred times better than he really is. Last season, Dalton threw for more than 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in leading the Bengals to an AFC North title. Gruden should have a huge impact on Robert Griffin III who is now fully recovered from his ACL injury. Griffin III, in my opinion, is being underdrafted. Teaming Gruden with a healthy Griffin III should drastically improve his passing stats along with the fact that he will give you rushing stats as a bonus. One of the things Gruden likes to do is spread the field and throw to multiple targets. A guy like Marvin Jones caught 10 touchdowns, which is good news for a guy like Andre Roberts, who is worth a late look. The Gruden departure opens the door for Hue Jackson to take over the offensive coordinator role for Cincinnati. Jackson is an accomplished coach who spent time in Baltimore working with Joe Flacco and had mild success as a head man in Oakland. Last year, Jackson was the running back coach doing a great job with rookie Giovani Bernard. The Bengals offense may take a step back but not much. Jim Caldwell, Detroit Caldwell ran one of the worst offenses in Baltimore last season. The Ravens ranked 30th in rushing yards, including a league-worst 3.1 yards per carry. Although Baltimore was ranked 18th in passing yards, it averaged 6.3 yards per pass which ranked tied for 31st with Jacksonville. Caldwell was never fired; in fact, he got a promotion when he was hired to be the coach for Detroit. The good news is Joe Lombardi will call the plays for Detroit. The Lions offense may take a step back, however, as Scott Linehan ran a very underrated offense for Detroit. Defense was the main problem in Detroit. As for the Ravens, former Mike Shanahan prodigy Gary Kubiak will be the new offensive coordinator, which should greatly improve their offense as he runs a very effective ...

Dynasty: Deciding Who to Keep fantasysharks.com Tue 7/29/14 6:00 AM

Every dynasty league has that day. You know it, cut day. The day where you decide who stays and who gets sent back into the draft. You scurry to make trades and get something for that decent player who you are about to cut. You are looking at who got signed where to see if it will impact one of your keepers. You look at what coaches have new jobs or who the new coordinators are. You look for any piece of news that just might give you insight on if someone is worth keeping or if it's time to part ways. You get heartburn trying to decide if that veteran has some years left in the tank or is that young guy finally going to get the snaps he needs to become a star? The last thing you want to do is cut someone who gets picked up by another team and then that guy is a central piece to their championship run. Because worse than knowing you cut that guy, is your friend reminding you of it every time you see them. The worst part of it all is the season has not even started, yet. In fact, you have not even drafted, yet. This is what I have come to call #DynastyLeagueProblems. Now that our heads are about to explode with all the things we have to consider before every move we make; who do we actually keep? Before you decide on who to keep you have know the rules of your league. Just like in a redraft league where you have to know the scoring system, in a dynasty league you also have to know the roster rules. When is the deadline to make your cuts? How many players do I have to keep? Are there any positions requirements? Are there options for keeping more or less players? All of this is just the tip of the iceberg, too. Deadline to Make Your Cuts You should always wait until the deadline to make your cuts. Hopefully the cut deadline is sometime in July, because usually by July we can start to see where things will shake out. Between the NFL draft, free agency, coaches going to new teams and injuries, you can really start to see the value of players for the upcoming season. The NFL draft can give you an indication what a team thinks about a player. For example, when the New York Jets drafted Geno Smith it was obvious they were looking for someone to challenge Mark Sanchez to start at quarterback, so keeping Sanchez on your team might not have been a good idea. Free agency does the same thing for me as the draft does, but it is usually more immediate. With rookies, a team might be more willing to wait a year before throwing them to the fire, free agents are ...

Pick This...Not That! (Fantasy Edition 2) fantasysharks.com Wed 7/16/14 9:06 AM

Cam Newton vs. Tony Romo So, you missed out on those top-tier quarterbacks and even a few more after that, odds are you'll be staring at one of these two quarterbacks to keep you in contention for the title. Cam Newton is awesome! He has all the skills and intangibles that make a fantastic quarterback. Unfortunately, you have to look at those tangibles, too. Newton has little-to-no help around him. After losing Steve Smith, Ted Ginn, Domenik Hixon and Brandon LaFell, the Panthers have few receivers left that produced much of anything in 2013. The backfield takes up a lot of the salary cap, and unless DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have a miracle year, it still won't be worth it. First-round pick Kelvin Benjamin will draw some attention from opposing defenses and will be a small flicker of hope in this revamped receiving corps but won't be able to keep that extra coverage away from proven commodity Greg Olsen. Speaking of great tight ends, Jason Witten is pretty darn good and has shown little decline in the past few seasons. Tony Romo will target him in the red zone more often than he did in 2012. Terrance Williams is set for a breakout season after the departure of Miles Austin. Oh, and did I mention that elite wide receiver Dez Bryant plays for Dallas? Secondly, let's not forget that offensive line! Dallas has one of the best, if not the best line in the NFL and only allowed 35 sacks last year. That's impressive considering Romo's not that mobile. Newton can run like a demon, but bit the turf 43 times, and that was with three-time Pro Bowler Jordan Gross at left tackle, who is now retired. Newton produced comparable passing stats to Kansas City's Alex Smith last year, but you don't see anybody reaching for him in their fantasy drafts. When it's all said and done, Tony Romo ends up a top 10 quarterback every year. Will he throw a game-ending interception in the final minutes of a big game? Most likely. But at least he has people to throw to. Pick Romo...Not Newton Kyle Rudolph vs. Jordan Cameron There is an air of change in Cleveland and Minnesota this year. With new coaches and the quarterback position in disarray, who knows what will happen? If you missed out on Jimmy Graham, Jordan Cameron may be the second tight end taken off the board (or at least be in the discussion). Cameron is being selected around the sixth round in most mock drafts while Kyle Rudolph is still on the board for several more rounds. This makes perfect sense...
