Dobbs completed five of eight attempts for 85 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and also rushed twice for 44 yards in the Steelers' 30-28 preseason win over the Buccaneers on Friday.

Dobbs is hoping to hold off Mason Rudolph and retain the back-up quarterback job behind Ben Roethlisberger this season. It would be in his best interests to get off to a good start after a disappointing 2018 campaign. Rudolph will also have an opportunity to show what he can do against Tampa Bay. Head coach Mike Tomlin made no mention of undrafted rookie Devlin Hodges, who is currently listed as fourth on the depth chart.

Now that he's officially inactive, Dobbs will assume backup duties for the second straight week after beating out rookie Mason Rudolph and the since-released Landry Jones for those honors at the conclusion of the preseason.

The news of Ben Roethlisberger (questionable) being evaluated as part of the league's concussion protocol likely had no bearing on this decision, as Tomlin added that Landry Jones will also sit this one out. Dobbs was third on the depth chart behind Roethlisberger and Jones last season, never taking a single snap, and the addition of Rudolph could result in either Dobbs or Jones failing to make the roster coming out of camp.
