In 13 games (12 starts) between the Cardinals and Vikings this past season, Dobbs completed 262 of 417 (62.8 percent) of his passes for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also was viable as a runner, averaging 5.5 yards on his 77 carries while scoring six TDs on the ground. Brock Purdy is the unquestioned starting quarterback for San Francisco, but Dobbs' recent on-field work should give him a leg up on the backup job ahead of holdover Brandon Allen.

He started the first eight games of the season for Arizona but was acquired by the Vikings near the trade deadline after Minnesota lost Kirk Cousins to a season-ending Achilles' tear. Dobbs appeared in five games (four starts) for the Vikings before being benched in favor of Nick Mullens to close out the year. Dobbs had a turnover problem in 2023, giving the ball away 17 times across 13 games. He's scheduled to be a free agent in March and will likely only attract backup work.

The 28-year-old had been the Vikings' No. 3 signal-caller for the Week 17 loss to the Packers, but Dobbs will move up a spot on the depth chart for the regular-season finale while rookie Jaren Hall drops to third.

The Vikings then dropped two straight before scoring just three points last Sunday in Las Vegas. Dobbs has thrown two touchdowns and five interceptions in those last three games, while also fumbling three times and losing one. O'Connell is giving Dobbs a break, but there's a chance we could see him under center again if Mullens and Hall fail to impress.

He completed just 10 of 23 pass attempts for 63 yards and carried five times for 21 yards in this past Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders before getting benched in the fourth quarter. Mullens directed Minnesota's only scoring drive of the game and will now be rewarded with his first start as a member of the Vikings in Week 15. The Vikings haven't announced whether Dobbs or rookie Jaren Hall will serve as Mullens' top backup.

It was the lowest-scoring game in the NFL since 2007, and Mullens led Minnesota to the only scoring drive on his second possession after taking over, taking the Vikings 56 yards for their only trip into the red zone to set up a 36-yard Greg Joseph field goal. With Dobbs having posted poor numbers two games in a row, Mullens seems very likely to get his first start of the season in Week 15 against the Bengals.

Minnesota's coaching staff mulled over the idea of inserting Nick Mullens or Jaren Hall under center after Dobbs struggled in the team's 12-10 loss to the Bears in Week 12, but Dobbs will ultimately remain atop the depth chart coming out of the Vikings' bye week. Prior to the poor showing against Chicago, Dobbs had at least one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in each of his first three appearances for the Vikings. While Dobbs' grip on the starting job is tenuous, his production could be aided by the expected return of star wide receiver Justin Jefferson (hamstring) for Sunday's game in Las Vegas.

O'Connell mentioned that he debated putting Nick Mullens into Monday's game after Dobbs struggled and threw four interceptions, so the Vikings could be serious about considering a quarterback change. Dobbs would still likely be the favorite to start over Mullens or Jaren Hall, but it doesn't sound like a given.

Dobbs completed 22 of 32 passes for 185 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions in the Vikings' 12-10 loss to the Bears on Monday night. He also rushed twice for 11 yards.

EDGE Analysis

Dobbs ultimately cobbled together a decent completion rate, but he averaged just 5.8 yards per attempt and constantly short-circuited drives with his interceptions. Improbably, only one of Dobbs' four picks led to any Bears points, and only a field goal at that. However, the first three came in Chicago territory, which was particularly costly in a game decided by two points. Dobbs did manage to pull the Vikings ahead just past the midway point of the fourth quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson, but Justin Fields ultimately one-upped him by leading a game-winning drive. Dobbs takes a 13:10 TD:INT (4:5 in four games with Minnesota) into a Week 14 road matchup against the Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 10 following a Week 13 bye.
