McCown agreed to a one-year contract with the Jets on Monday, his agent, Mike McCartney, reports.

After visiting with the team over the weekend, McCown officially put pen to paper Monday on a deal that will bring him to New York City to play for the Jets. He's made previous stops in Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Chicago over the past five years and has proven to be a valuable backup quarterback as well as a solid fill-in starter when called upon. However, the 37-year-old offers little upside at this point in his career and, while he initially slots in as the Jets No. 1 QB atop the depth chart, is not the long-term solution at quarterback and his signing shouldn't prevent New York from considering a signal caller in the early rounds of this year's draft.

McCown will visit with the Jets on Friday and Saturday, ESPN.com reports.

With free agent Geno Smith expected to join the other New York football team, the Jets are left with a woefully inexperienced quarterback group consisting of 2016 second-rounder Christian Hackenberg and 2015 fourth-rounder Bryce Petty. The addition of McCown would provide some veteran stability without dissuading the Jets from pursuing another QB to add to the pack. The 37-year-old McCown has proven to be a high-end backup/low-end starter in the latter stage of his career, which has included strong showings for the 2013 Bears and 2015 Browns. New York might provide McCown with his best shot to earn a Week 1 starting job.

Tony Romo is expected to be in another uniform next season and Kellen Moore (ankle) is unproven, so McCown would provide Dak Prescott with a reliable, veteran backup in 2017 should he sign. The Cowboys had interest in trading for McCown last year as well after Moore was injured in camp, but the Browns' asking price in a trade was apparently too high. Now that he's a free agent, the way is clear for him to finally come to Dallas.

McCown struggled with injuries during his two-year stint in Cleveland, which could deter teams from signing him to a deal. Regardless, he has proven to be a valuable backup quarterback throughout his 14 seasons in the league and should attract the attention of at least one organization going forward.

The finger issue leaves McCown's status moving forward in question, but he will have extra time to rest and recover with the Browns on bye in Week 13. He started and threw for a healthy 322 yards in Sunday's loss to the Giants, but he may not be under center when the Browns return to action with fellow quarterback and Week 1 starter Robert Griffin (shoulder) back at practice.

Starting in place of injured Cody Kessler (concussion), McCown was able to spread the ball around to eight different receivers for a total of 322 yards -- including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Corey Coleman -- but his two turnovers and 18 incompletions marred his day. His two fumbles can be blamed on his offensive line, as the men protecting McCown allowed a whopping seven sacks, but nonetheless, McCown needs to do a better job of protecting the ball if the Browns expect to win a game this season. The Browns have a bye in Week 13, and it's unknown who will grab a hold of the quarterback reins against the Bengals the following week.

With Cody Kessler in the NFL's concussion protocol, McCown will start this coming Sunday's game against the Giants, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

EDGE Analysis

McCown is thus an option in very deep, or two-QB formats, but given the state of the 0-11 Browns' offense, he's not a high-percentage fantasy play in Week 12.
