The veteran quarterback is as accurate as it gets and knows how to get the ball to his playmakers, so Brees is primed for another productive campaign at the advanced age of 40.

Brees stands to see his only snaps of the preseason versus New York on Saturday, when New Orleans' starters are projected to see their most extensive action of any exhibition match. The veteran-signal caller is surrounded by familiar faces on offense, such as Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, Tre'Quan Smith and Ted Ginn (undisclosed), but is also working to build a rapport with a number of free-agent signees including Jared Cook and Latavius Murray.

It remains to be seen how much -- if any -- action Brees, who did not play in the Saints' preseason opener last week, might see Sunday, but given that he's in uniform, it's at least possible he'll see some snaps. With that in mind, Just notes that Brees sat out last year's second exhibition tilt. The team's third preseason game, next Saturday against the Jets, is the contest in which New Orleans' top players are likely to see their most extensive preseason action.

Brees missed some spring practices while dealing with a lawsuit against a California jeweler, Rod Walker of The New Orleans Advocate reports.

Given his wealth of experience in coach Sean Payton's offense, Brees shouldn't be impacted by a few missed practice sessions in May and June. He's once again set up with an excellent situation, as the Saints replaced Mark Ingram with Latavius Murray and added pass-catching tight end Jared Cook to replace Benjamin Watson. The team lost starting center Max Unger to retirement, but acquired two potential replacements with upside in free-agent signee Nick Easton and second-round pick Erik McCoy. With Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk locked in at the tackle spots, Brees should still be well protected as he looks to rebound from a modest finish to the 2018 campaign. A healthier season from Ted Ginn and continued development from Tre'Quan Smith could lead to a more balanced passing game that isn't as dependent on quick passes to Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara.

The move clears up $10.8 million in cap room as the Saints attempt to re-sign backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and add tight end Jared Cook. Kicking the can down the road with Brees' contract is an annual tradition, with the team presumably resigned to taking a large dead cap charge whenever the 40-year-old quarterback retires. Brees won't have Mark Ingram (Ravens) by his side in 2019, but the addition of Cook would more than make up for the loss in terms of pass-game value.

Brees plans to continue his football career, ESPN.com's Mike Triplett reports. "I feel pretty positive," Brees said Sunday. "I plan on being here next year and making another run at it."

Brees had a tough time against the Los Angeles defense in the late stages of the NFC Championship Game, but he still came within one blown call of reaching the Super Bowl for a second time. He enjoyed one of his better seasons in 2018, establishing a new career-high mark for passer rating (115.7) while breaking his own NFL record for completion percentage (74.4). The 40-year-old is still a reliable fantasy starter, though his utility has dropped off the past two seasons with the Saints often relying on their running game and defense to obtain victories. Backed by a strong offensive line as well as Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, it's probably an easy decision for Brees to play another season. The team might rely on its passing game a bit more if Mark Ingram finds a new home in free agency.

Brees completed 26 of 40 passes for 249 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the Rams' 26-24 overtime win over the Saints in Sunday's NFC Championship. He also lost two yards on two rushes.

EDGE Analysis

Brees showered plenty of attention on Alvin Kamara, hitting his dynamic running back on 11 occasions for 96 yards. The Rams did an excellent job taking away Michael Thomas after the third-year wideout eviscerated them in their regular-season meeting, limiting Brees' downfield options overall. However, if not for one of the most controversial non-calls in recent postseason history -- a would-be pass interference call on the Rams' Nickell Robey-Coleman against Tommylee Lewis that would have given the Saints a key first down deep in Rams territory late -- Brees may well have been the quarterback representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. The multi-time Pro Bowler ends what was yet another stellar season on a disappointing note, one in which he generated a 32:5 TD:INT and threw for 3,992 yards.

Brees completed 28 of 38 passes for 301 yards with two touchdowns and an interception during the Saints' 20-14 divisional-round playoff win over the Eagles on Sunday. He also netted zero yards on three rushes.

The future Hall of Famer's day couldn't have started off any worse, as he was intercepted by Cre'von LeBlanc on a deep throw down the middle intended for Ted Ginn on his first pass of the day. However, it was much more trademark Brees from that point forward, as he completed 28 of his subsequent 37 attempts, with 12 of his completions and 171 of his yards going to Michael Thomas. Brees also connected with Thomas for a two-yard score to cap off an outstanding 18-play, 92-yard march that took up 11:29 of the third quarter, a throw that was preceded by a two-yard hook-up with Keith Kirkwood in the second to begin the Saints' comeback from an early 14-0 hole. Brees will now look to repeat the feat in what could be an offensive showdown for the ages versus the Rams in next Sunday's NFC championship game.

Brees (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Panthers, John DeShazier of the Saints' official site reports.

It was revealed a couple days earlier that Brees wouldn't play in Week 17 with the Saints having secured the NFC's No. 1 seed in the postseason, but it wasn't known whether or not he would dress as the backup to fill-in starter Teddy Bridgewater. Brees' place on the inactive list ensures that Taysom Hill will work as Bridgewater's top understudy.

Teddy Bridgewater will replace Brees as the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Panthers, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Brees led his team to the No. 1 seed in the NFC and can now get some rest before the divisional round of the playoffs. He'll finish a season with less than 4,000 passing yards for the first time as a member of the Saints, but he more than made up for it with 8.2 yards per attempt, 32 touchdowns and only five interceptions, not to mention a new single-season NFL record for completion percentage (74.4). Brees is the only threat to prevent Patrick Mahomes from winning an MVP award.
