Swift (groin) practiced in a limited capacity Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The Lions appear to be using a maintenance plan with Swift after he dealt with a groin issue during training camp and the preseason, and proceeded to play 68 percent of the offensive snaps Week 1 against the 49ers. Meanwhile, Jamaal Williams also has been limited in practice this week after logging 35 percent of the offensive plays this past Sunday. Swift earned 19 touches to Williams' 17 in that contest, and assuming both are available Monday in Green Bay, a similar breakdown of work may come to pass, even if Williams again gets the starting nod.

Swift (groin) was a limited practice participant Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Swift was sidelined for the entire preseason slate due to a groin injury, and there was some question whether he'd be able to handle a full workload Week 1 against the 49ers with veteran back Jamaal Williams on hand. Swift nearly doubled Williams' snap count on offense (63 versus 32) while the pair put up similar stat lines (Swift had 19 touches for 104 total yards and one TD; Williams had 17-110-1, respectively). Now, both backs are limited in practice, with Williams dealing with a chest injury. The Lions don't play until Monday night in Green Bay, so both Swift and Williams have a bit more time than normal to prepare for game day.

Swift was on the field for 63 of the Lions' 92 offensive snaps in Sunday's Week 1 loss to the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
Swift was listed as the team's second running back on the depth chart behind Jamaal Williams heading into the matchup. However, that's not how things played out on the field, as Swift out-snapped Williams 63-32 and out-touched him 19-17. That said, both backs served a significant role in the offense, though Swift should be set to pace the backfield again in Week 2 against Green Bay.

Swift logged 11 carries for 39 yards and hauled in eight of his team-high 11 targets for 65 yards and a TD in Sunday's 41-33 loss to the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
Meanwhile, Jamaal Williams -- who was announced as the Lions' starting RB for Sunday's game -- recorded nine carries for 54 yards and a TD and caught eight of his nine targets for 56 yards. It remains to be seen which back is tabbed as the starter next Monday against Green Bay, and if the team was inclined to ease Swift into the mix in Week 1 given that he's bouncing back from a groin injury. There was certainly a time-share scenario in play Sunday, but both players were involved enough to help those who rolled with them in fantasy lineups.

Jamaal Williams was announced as the Lions' starting running back over Swift Sunday against the 49ers, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
It remains to be seen how this plays out, but the resulting box score/snaps counts will be worth monitoring to see how the Lions' RB backfield workload shakes out in Week 1. Swift -- who is bouncing back from a groin injury -- was not among Detroit's inactives Sunday.

Head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that Swift (groin) will be ready for the Lions' Week 1 matchup versus the 49ers on Sunday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Swift's groin injury limited his activity in training camp and the preseason, but the Lions never seemed concerned he was at risk of missing the start of the season. Rather than proving that he's healthy, the second-year back's focus in practice this week will likely be working to regain conditioning and getting in as many reps as he can to ensure he's in top form against what projects to be a tough 49ers defense. Campbell has said that he envisions offseason pickup Jamaal Williams having an important role in the season opener, but Swift is still expected to lead the backfield in snaps and touches if he's active Sunday.

Coach Dan Campbell revealed Tuesday that he's concerned about Swift's conditioning and readiness for Week 1 as he works his way back from a groin injury, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
It sounds like the concern is about workload/endurance more so than availability, but the latter could also come into question if Swift doesn't respond well on the practice field. To that end, he's scheduled for a rigorous practice Tuesday, perhaps getting a chance to ease some of Campbell's doubts. The second-year pro practiced Monday, with Chris Burke of The Athletic reporting afterward that Swift appeared on track for Week 1 against San Francisco.

Swift (groin) seemed to be moving well during Monday's practice and is on track to be ready for Week 1, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Lions had a light practice Monday, and Swift reportedly caught a few passes during 1-on-1 drills. While the running back probably won't see any preseason snaps for the third week in a row when Detroit takes on Indianapolis on Friday, there doesn't seem to be any concern over Swift's availability for the regular-season opener.

Swift (groin) will get some reps in team drills Thursday, but he's ruled out for Saturday's preseason game against Pittsburgh, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Swift previously was expected to resume practicing Tuesday, which might've given him a chance to be cleared for the game this weekend. In any case, he could make an appearance in the final week of the preseason, or the Lions could wait until Week 1 to unleash their lead back. It's still unclear how much work Swift will lose to offseason addition Jamaal Williams, who took all the first-team reps in the exhibition opener. Swift has been dealing with a groin injury since the first week of August.

Head coach Dan Campbell said Swift (groin) is expected to return to practice Thursday, Eric Woodyard of ESPN reports. "[Swift] is trending the right way," Campbell said.
EDGE Analysis
Previous reports stated that Swift was expected to return to practice Tuesday, but that never came to fruition. Even if Swift does make it back on the field Thursday, there's no guarantee that he will make his preseason debut Saturday against the Steelers.
