Davis has decided he doesn't want to return to the NFL, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports.
EDGE Analysis
After announcing his retirement last August, Davis applied for reinstatement this March and was subsequently released by the Jets so that he could pursue an opportunity elsewhere. The wideout had a tryout with the Bills this week, but it appears that nothing will come of it given Cappacio's report. Davis is only 29 years old, but it was never a given that he'd land a significant role with an NFL club if he did decide to return given that he hasn't suited up since 2022.

The Bills hosted Davis for a tryout Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Davis retired while with the Jets last season but applied for reinstatement to the NFL back in March, and he's now attempting to latch on with a new AFC East team. Buffalo could be looking to replace the big-bodied Chase Claypool (toe) at training camp, as he landed on season-ending IR on Tuesday. If he manages to latch on with the Bills, Davis could have an opportunity to press veterans Mack Hollins, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and KJ Hamler for a depth role in the wide receiver room.

The Jets officially released Davis from the reserve/retired list Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
This transaction comes on the heels of Davis applying for reinstatement from the NFL earlier Thursday. In the later stages of the 2023 preseason, he announced his retirement, but the now 29-year-old has put himself on a path to returning to the highest form of pro football. In two campaigns with the Jets between 2021 and 2022, Davis hauled in 66 of 123 targets for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns in 22 games.

Davis has applied for reinstatement to the NFL and the Jets are expected to release him from the reserve/retired list Thursday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Davis could also return to New York on a new contract, after he stepped away from the team and into retirement last August. The 29-year-old wideout put up a 32-536-2 line in his last played season, when he suited up for 13 games with the Jets back in 2022. He should be able to contribute as a depth receiver as long as it doesn't take too long to catch back up to speed, whether he ultimately re-ups with New York or lands elsewhere.

The Jets placed Davis on the reserve/retired list Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com Davis -- who had been excused from team activities for the last 10 days -- announced Wednesday that he planned to step away from football. With the 28-year-old's retirement having been made official, the Jets will move on with a wide receiver corps featuring Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb.

Davis announced Wednesday via his personal Instagram account that he plans to step away from the NFL, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old entered the league in 2017 with the Titans, who chose him fifth overall in that year's draft. Assuming Davis follows through with his plans to at least temporarily put his career on hold, the Jets' receiver corps will now be led by Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb. During his two seasons with New York, Davis appeared in 22 games, recording 66 catches for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns in that span.

Davis didn't practice Tuesday due to a personal matter, John Pullano of the Jets' official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Per Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, while head coach Robert Saleh didn't comment Wednesday on Davis' availability for Week 1, he noted that the wideout can take "however long he needs" before returning to the team. As long as Davis is sidelined, the Jets' top available options at receiver will be Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman.

Davis is suited up for Saturday's preseason contest against the Panthers, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Davis didn't play in the Jets' first exhibition, but it looks like he'll get a taste of game action Saturday along with Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman. However, the Jets will be without Aaron Rodgers, Garrett Wilson (ankle), Randall Cobb and Breece Hall (knee), so Davis should be a top target for Zach Wilson versus Carolina.

Jets coach Robert Saleh said Friday that Davis "will be on this team" in 2023, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Between a busy offseason for the Jets and Davis' non-guaranteed $10.5 million base salary, the 28-year-old wideout has been oft-mentioned as a potential cap casualty. The Jets traded WR Elijah Moore to Cleveland in late March, but only after signing Allen Lazard and Mecole Hardman, and they later added Randall Cobb to give QB Aaron Rodgers another one of his former receivers from Green Bay. Saleh pointed to Davis' blocking and "big boy catches" as reasons he'd stay with the Jets, but it still won't be much of a surprise if the front office has other ideas. Davis has played 22 of a possible 34 games since joining the Jets, catching 66 of 123 targets (53.7 percent) for 1,028 yards (15.6 YPR, 8.4 YPT) and six touchdowns. The rate numbers aren't bad considering the lousy QB play he's dealt with, but $10.5 million is a lot to pay for a receiver who isn't even guaranteed a full-time role.

Davis caught one of three targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the Dolphins. He finishes the season with 32 catches on 64 targets for 536 yards and two touchdowns.
EDGE Analysis
Davis needed just nine games to rack up 34 catches for 492 yards and four touchdowns in 2021. He played four more games in 2022 but had two fewer catches and two fewer touchdowns while totaling only 44 more yards. Rookie first-round pick Garrett Wilson emerged as the go-to option in the Jets' passing game, and the team's poor quarterback play didn't leave room for another receiver to produce consistently. Davis -- who turns 28 on Jan. 11 -- has one more year left on his contract but no guaranteed money.
