Hackenberg could lose his roster spot this offseason, ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Jets likely will re-sign Josh McCown or add another veteran, in addition to taking a close look at the top available quarterbacks in the upcoming draft. Given that he's yet to attempt a pass in the regular season and hasn't been able to pass Bryce Petty on the depth chart, Hackenberg is unlikely to enter OTAs any higher than third in the pecking order at quarterback. The 2016 second-round pick was awful in limited preseason action the past two years, completing 59 of 121 passes (48.8 percent) for 531 yards (4.4 per attempt) with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Petty may also find himself on the chopping block this offseason.

Hackenberg might get some playing time Sunday against the Patriots, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
While still committed to Bryce Petty as the starter, Jets head coach Todd Bowles acknowledged that Hackenberg could be used as a mid-game replacement. It's increasingly clear that the Jets don't view either player as a potential franchise quarterback, but there's no harm in giving Hackenberg a brief look, given that Petty has completed less than half his passes and produced just 4.1 yards per attempt. Hackenberg can't possibly be much worse.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that there isn't a scenario "right now" where Hackenberg plays over the team's final three games, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Josh McCown (hand) hitting injured reserve Tuesday, Bryce Petty will take over as the team's starting quarterback Week 15 against the Saints. Like Hackenberg, Petty is a similarly youthful developmental quarterback who has yet to prove his worth at the NFL level, but based on Bowles' comments, it seems as though Petty has demonstrated enough in practices this season to create clear separation from Hackenberg, who will be active for the first time in 2017 as the backup signal caller. Even if an injury to or poor play from Petty were to open up an opportunity over the final three contests, Hackenberg wouldn't warrant a look outside of deep two-quarterback formats.

Hackenberg could get a look before the end of the season if Josh McCown can't play with a broken left hand, ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reports.
EDGE Analysis
Ineffective in the preseason, Hackenberg has been a healthy scratch as the No. 3 quarterback all year. Jets head coach Todd Bowles already said Bryce Petty will take over as the starter for Week 15 in New Orleans if McCown can't play through his injury, but that doesn't necessarily mean the team would stick with Petty for the rest of the season. It still seems pretty clear that the Jets don't view Petty or Hackenberg as a potential franchise quarterback. The team figures to acquire a young signal caller in the 2018 draft, while McCown has made a strong case to stick around for another year. Regardless of what happens over the next few weeks, Hackenberg likely will find himself fighting for a roster spot in camp next year.

Hackenberg (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday for the Jets' Week 2 game against the Raiders, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hackenberg served as the backup to starter Josh McCown in the season-opening loss to the Bills while Bryce Petty was getting over a strained knee, but now that Petty has had some time to heal up, Hackenberg looks like he'll be the Jets' No. 3 quarterback for the foreseeable future. That likely means that Hackenberg will be a fixture on the inactive list throughout the season, unless an injury affects the status of either McCown or Petty.

Hackenberg is listed as the Jets' No. 3 quarterback on their official depth chart released Tuesday, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
EDGE Analysis
While it wasn't surprising that veteran Josh McCown captured the starting role during training camp over the unproven Hackenberg, the second-year signal caller's placement on the depth chart behind Bryce Petty, who missed the preseason finale with a sprained knee, is more unexpected. Petty has indicated that he expects to be ready for the Week 1 matchup with the Bills, but his shaky health may prompt coach Todd Bowles to keep all three of the team's quarterbacks active for that contest. Since the 38-year-old McCown likely isn't the Jets' long-term answer at quarterback, there is a strong possibility that Bowles kicks the tires with the backup options at some point this season, but at this time, it appears a healthy Petty would receive a chance to replace McCown before Hackenberg does.

Hackenberg will compete for the no. 2 quarterback job with Bryce Petty (knee) after Josh McCown was named the opening-day starter Monday, ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Jets had what they called an open competition for the starting quarterback role during training camp, but McCown was always the favorite to win the position. With Hackenberg not playing nearly well enough during preseason games and in practice reps, McCown, who wasn't overly impressive in his own right, will get the Week 1 start. McCown, 38, doesn't have a ton of upside, and given his injury history it's not out of the question that Hackenberg could take over at some point.

Hackenberg completed 12 of 21 passes for 126 yards, a touchdown and two picks in Saturday's preseason loss to the Giants. He also scampered for a 13-yard run during the game.
EDGE Analysis
With the Jets in a clear rebuild mode, it makes sense to give Hackenberg every opportunity to show what he can do before looking to what's available in 2018. The Jets did that on Saturday, starting Hackenberg and then bringing him back at the end of the game after Bryce Petty went down. Hackenberg connected on a touchdown that almost completed an impressive comeback, but the two pick-sixes in the first half are hard to ignore. Hackenberg has now turned the ball over three times with one score in two preseason starts, while completing just over half of his pass attempts.

Hackenberg completed just two of six pass attempts for 14 yards during Saturday's preseason loss to Detroit.
EDGE Analysis
The Jets went three-and-out on each series Hackenberg was under center, and he was also sacked twice. Detroit was able to generate tremendous quarterback pressure, and the Penn State product didn't have an answer. Perhaps, the plan was for him to exit after three series, but it's also possible head coach Todd Bowles pulled Hackenberg to avoid completely shattering the youngster's confidence. After watching from the sidelines for the entire 2016 season, Hackenberg was expected to push veteran Josh McCown for the starting quarterback job during training camp, but that seems like a stretch now. Additionally, Bryce Petty outperformed Hackenberg on Saturday, and Petty has at least seen regular-season game action. It looks like a steep uphill climb to fantasy relevance in 2017 for Hackenberg at this stage of the game.

Hackenberg completed 18-of-25 passes for 127 yards during Saturday's preseason win over the Titans.
EDGE Analysis
Josh McCown got the start and threw a touchdown on his lone series, and while Hackenberg couldn't get the Jets into the end zone, it was still a decent performance that could have been better if not for a few dropped passes. Hackenberg still seems stuck behind McCown on the depth chart, but he's shoring up his spot as the backup ahead of Bryce Petty, who was just 2-of-6 for 16 yards.
