On Second Thought...Week 12 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/19/13 9:06 AM

As I look at the most added and most dropped list I can't help but notice some names that to me just scream, "this owner is in panic mode!" There are obviously exceptions to every situation. For example, I am sure that some pickups and drops that were from deep leagues where the waiver wire is picked over thoroughly. Consider, however, that in order for these players to be on the most added or dropped list there are definitely owners in standard leagues making these moves, and if that is the case, you may want to think twice before you do that. One name that is among the top of the added player list is Donald Brown . Brown had an amazing night on Thursday with 94 total yards and two touchdowns. Brown has had two good weeks in a row. So it makes sense that you would want to grab him. Now as far as Brown is concerned, I do not have a problem with an owner grabbing him, I will however caution you against expecting that sort of output on a normal basis. Remember, Brown has only made it through one full season uninjured in his entire career. Couple that with the fact that the Colts gave up too high of a pick and paid far too much for Trent Richardson to leave him on the sidelines. As much as that just "chaps" some of us fantasy owners who have players like Brown, it "chaps" real owners even more when they pay someone big money and the coach doesn't even play them. Brown's touches will unfortunately be too limited to make his production reliable heading into the playoffs. He could end up being a very valuable stash though, if you have the roster space. Another highly picked up running back has been Dennis Johnson. This has not been for any great numbers he has given us, as opposed, to splashes of brilliance we have seen and Ben Tate having four broken ribs. At this point, the only chance of anyone grabbing Johnson has is a Tate injury. Consider the pain of a broken rib, I've had them and trust me it is ridiculous, and then realize Tate has four of them and he is still playing. Then you need to consider that Tate was supposed to be the next great back in Houston years ago, but after getting injured found his career usurped by Arian Foster, is probably going to need to be taken off the field on a stretcher before he will give up the reins to Johnson or anyone behind him on the depth chart. It is the only explanation for a man playing with four broken ribs and by the way, his ribs are only getting healthier every week. So I believe there are better ...

Fantasy 411 - Week 12 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/19/13 4:30 AM

Astute fantasy owners had Bobby Rainey on their radar after the Cleveland Browns traded Trent Richardson away, but Tampa Bay swooped in and acquired Rainey after an injury sidelined Doug Martin. Rainey was still a long shot to have a fantasy impact until Mike James suffered a broken leg last week, opening the door for Rainey to get more carries. With only 21 carries on the season entering Week 11, and a looming timeshare with Brian Leonard, there was little to get excited for Rainey and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that all changed ...or did it? Rainey carved up the hapless Atlanta defense with 163 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Throw in a couple of receptions, one of which went for a touchdown, and Rainey now figures to be the primary waiver wire target this week. Leonard only got four carries, and did little with them, only gaining 16 yards. Rainey should continue to get the bulk of the work in Tampa Bay, but don't be too quick to forget Martin's early-season troubles. Tampa Bay has several tough running matchups down the stretch and owners will need to have reasonable expectations going forward. If there was going to be a week for Ray Rice to break out of his slump, it figured to be this week against Chicago. There was some concern that Bernard Pierce would get enough carries to cloud Rice's productivity. With Pierce only able to gain 18 yards on 10 carries, Rice was able to turn in his best outing of the season. Rice has been too inconsistent on the season to allow fantasy owners to count on him for anything other than a matchup flex play the rest of the season. With many leagues facing their trade deadline, the outing comes at a perfect time to dangle a player with Rice's name recognition to finalize a deal to a desperate owner. Maurice Jones-Drew finds himself in the same boat as Rice. Both have been major disappointments, but have performed good enough lately to, hopefully, facilitate a trade this week. Jones-Drew found the end zone for the second straight week and should garner at least a little attention from owners who are thin at running back. I don't buy the resurgence, as evidenced by the scant 41 and 23 rushing yards in those two weeks and would encourage you to entertain any offers for him. Reggie Bush has managed to do enough as both a runner and receiver to be a very valuable fantasy back this season. He seems to find a way to contribute in one aspect of the game if the other isn't working for him. On Sunday, the Detroit ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 12 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/19/13 1:06 AM

Our top section stays in hibernation this week. Nothing "Smokin' Hot," but there's plenty in the other categories worth taking a look at. Even this late in the season, there are still players available that are going to be fantasy contributors. Take a hard look at your last roster spot and be willing to mix it up a bit and grab something new and cut the old. If nothing else, it will keep another owner from grabbing a player that they may need for their starting lineup. We continue to be high on several players that we've previously mentioned, and if they are still available in your league then grab them above all else on this list. Running backs Shane Vereen (New England), Donald Brown (Indianapolis) and Montee Ball (Denver) are owned in a majority of leagues, but not all. Wide receivers Jarrett Boykin (Green Bay), Aaron Dobson (New England) and Rishard Matthews (Miami) are also owned in most leagues, but not all. John Carlson (Minnesota) is a tight end in this category as well. These guys can be plugged in to cover a bye week or injury and are immediate fantasy contributors. We've got plenty of others to talk about. There's something for everyone in this week's wonders! Solid Pickups RB Chris Rainey, Tampa Bay We had Rainey listed as a deep pickup last week, as the Tampa Bay running back situation was up for grabs between he and Brian Leonard. More than 160 yards in total offense and three touchdowns later, Rainey announced his desire to be the top back for Tampa Bay. He clearly has the hot hand, and with Detroit on tap, Rainey is in line to be the top waiver wire pickup this week. RB Chris Ogbonnaya, Cleveland The Cleveland Browns have been shifting the majority of the work in the direction of Ogbonnaya, and he has not disappointed. Against Cincinnati, he was good for 99 yards in total offense, more importantly, he played the majority of the snaps for Cleveland. With only Willis McGahee and Fozzy Whittaker as his competition, look for Ogbonnaya to become more of a workhorse for the Browns. WR Rod Streater, Oakland Matt McGloin was a spark for the Oakland offense, with Streater one of the beneficiaries. Six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown against Houston gets him a mention here with the hope that these numbers can continue. Oakland has favorable passing matchups on the upcoming schedule, and Streater is worth owning in all formats. TE Delanie Walker, Tennessee Walker has been quiet of late, but he has clearly made a connection ...

Waiver Wire Wonders - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/12/13 5:00 AM

We set aside our top category this week, as nothing stands out as being ‘Smokin' Hot.' There are plenty of players in all our other categories, many of which can be fantasy contributors right away. All the key positions have players worth looking at this week, including a pair of quarterbacks and a trio of tight ends. Several fantasy players are ready to emerge in the coming weeks, so grab them before they become hot commodities. We continue to be high on several running backs that are owned in most formats, but not all, and we'd pick them up over all the players listed this week. This list includes Rashad Jennings (Oakland), Andre Brown (New York Giants), Bernard Pierce (Baltimore) and Shane Vereen (New England). At the wide receiver position, those falling into that same category include Aaron Dobson (New England), Kenny Stills (New Orleans) and Jarrett Boykin (Green Bay). Fear not, if those players are gone, we've got something for everyone in this week's wonders! Solid Pickups TE John Carlson, Minnesota Last week we mentioned Carlson as a "deep" look, this week he graduates as one of this week's top waiver wire pickups. Starting in place of the injured Kyle Rudolph, Carlson caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown against Washington. Rudolph was averaging close to 50 yards per game. Based on this first week without Rudolph, we look for Carlson to keep those numbers going as the starting Vikings' tight end. WR Rishard Matthews, Miami The loss of Brandon Gibson clears a spot for Matthews in the lineup, and Monday night against Tampa Bay had him being featured in the slot position. Ryan Tannehill looked in his direction early and often in the contest, as Matthews rang up close to 100 yards in the first half alone, including a touchdown pass. Matthews is worth owning as a low-end wide receiver in all formats. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tennessee With Jake Locker done for the season, the Titans will turn to Fitzpatrick for the duration of the season as their starter. To go along with 264 passing yards, he threw two touchdowns and no interceptions. Of more importance is Fitzpatrick's ability to run, as he also ran his way into the end zone this week. As the starter going forward, Fitzpatrick is worth owning as a backup fantasy quarterback. On the Radar RB Brian Leonard, Tampa Bay The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to rip through running backs, with this week's starter Mike James leaving Monday night's game early with an apparent...

Preseason Week 3: Thursday Night Football fantasysharks.com Sat 8/25/12 1:00 PM1 Comment

Green Bay 27, Cincinnati 13 Green Bay In case you forgot, Aaron Rodgers is a stud. In this game he reminded us of his athleticism, gaining 52 yards on six rushes with two touchdowns. Alex Green started in the Green Bay backfield but was quickly replaced by Cedric Benson. Making his Packers debut, Benson played nearly the entire first half looking solid while averaging just better than six yards per carry. We should also note that Benson received a goal line carry, although unable to convert. With rumors of James Starks on the roster bubble, Benson has sudden appeal as a mid RB3 with upside. Greg Jennings returned for the Packers after dealing with lingering concussion issues. Jennings would prove he's ready by leading his team with 37 yards receiving, including a sick tippy-toe catch along the sidelines. Cincinnati Andy Dalton had a tough outing as the Packers defense came to play. Green Bay was getting consistent pressure throughout the first half with multiple blitz packages as Dalton took a number of big hits. In case you didn't see this game, Dalton just missed a wide open A.J. Green for a deep pass that would have resulted in an 80-yard touchdown. Just saying. The continued absence of BenJarvus Green-Ellis (turf toe) should begin raising concerns. Also absent was backup running back Bernard Scott, giving way once again to Cedric Peerman and Brian Leonard for the second straight game. Neither has fantasy value. Baltimore 48, Jacksonville 17 Baltimore Joe Flacco had a great game force feeding wide receiver Torrey Smith, who garnered 11 targets for the Ravens in just over one-half of play, 11! Smith caught eight of those balls for 103 yards. It's overtly obvious that Flacco is a much, much better quarterback with Smith in the lineup, but remains a mid/high QB2 with spot start potential. Anquan Boldin has clearly lost a step, but is still effective utilizing his body to shield off defenders and catch the ball underneath. Boldin is a low-end WR3. Ray Rice didn't play long, giving way to Chris Rainey and Bernard Pierce. Both Rainey and Pierce had a solid performance, adding confusion to which player will develop into the Rice handcuff, giving us reason to monitor Week 4 of the preseason. Jacksonville Blaine Gabbert got the full brunt of one of the league's best defensive units as all the Ravens' key players were in the game. Despite the low score, Gabbert again played at a high level, continually hooking up with rookie wide receiver ...

The Feeding Frenzy fantasysharks.com Tue 9/27/11 9:06 AM

It's another week in the books and another week of star players going down. One week after Jamaal Charles was lost for the season Kenny Britt's year was cut prematurely short with a knee injury. Toss in some ineffective play and a suspension and the waiver wire will be burning up once again. I think there are a lot of attractive options on the wire this week that have a chance to be long-term fantasy factors if things break the right way. On the other hand, a couple of players who had big games likely won't duplicate their performances again this season. Now let's take a look at the names people will be targeting on the waiver wire after Week 3: Tim Tebow, QB Broncos The fans in Denver have been for calling for Tebow for the past two years. Be careful what you wish for because you may get it. I've been on record saying I don't believe Tebow will ever be a great starting quarterback in the NFL. However, his style is made for fantasy football. Tebow will always get rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, which makes him valuable to fantasy owners, as we saw at the end of last season. I don't think it's all Kyle Orton's fault in Denver but sooner or later the Broncos have to find out what they have in Tebow. I know reports surfaced this summer that Brady Quinn is ahead of Tebow on the depth chart but I'm not buying that for a second. Even if he is, Quinn won't stay there for long. Tebow will most likely be under center for the Broncos at some point this year. It's only a matter of time. As Tebow showed last season, when he plays he has fantasy value. The Final Call: Tebow is worth an add and stash in deeper leagues and two-quarterback leagues if you have the room on your roster. Bernard Scott, RB Bengals With word coming down that Cedric Benson will be serving a three-game suspension; Scott will take over as the starting running back in Cincinnati. Scott averaged 4.9 yards per carry last season and he's always done well in relief of Benson. However, there are a couple of things standing between Scott and fantasy success. The Bengals don't have the most explosive offense in the world. With rookie Andy Dalton under center, the Bengals are going to struggle some weeks, as we saw on Sunday against the 49ers. In games where Dalton isn't playing well, the Bengals aren't going to run the ball regardless of who's in the backfield. Also, expect Brian Leonard to see some snaps while Benson is out. One thing Scott has struggled with in the past is pass ...
