Hoyer completed 5-of-13 passes for 32 yards and a TD in Thursday's 37-20 preseason win over the Eagles.

EDGE Analysis

To date, seventh-round rookie Danny Etling hasn't made much of a push to supplant Hoyer as the Patriots' No. 2 QB. With Tom Brady entrenched as the team's starter, Hoyer is only worth rostering in formats with deep enough benches to secure insurance for key starters. In the event that Brady suffers an injury, Hoyer is capable enough to produce decent fantasy numbers while helming the New England offense, but his upside on that front obviously can't match Brady's.

Hoyer completed 16 of 23 passes for 144 yards in Thursday's preseason opener against Washington.

EDGE Analysis

Hoyer got the start and stayed in the game until midway through the fourth quarter, eventually engineering a pair of touchdown drives against Washington's scrubs. While one bad outing won't cost Hoyer the No. 2 quarterback job, he could face pressure from seventh-round rookie Danny Etling if the next few weeks don't look better.

Hoyer completed 123 of 211 passing attempts for 1,287 passing yards to go along with four TDs and four picks during the 2017 regular season.

EDGE Analysis

All but four of his completions and 42 of his passing yards were accrued while Hoyer was a member of the 49ers, with whom the 32-year-old played six games this past season before being released and then signed to a three-year deal by New England, where he played from 2009 to 2011. His experience and familiarity with the organization provides the team with some short-term backup stability behind 40-year-old-starter Tom Brady, while Hoyer's two remaining seasons under contract with the team presumably paves to the way for the franchise to draft and develop another young signal-caller to groom now that Patriots' 2014 second-rounder Jimmy Garoppolo is helming San Francisco's offense.

Hoyer has signed a three-year deal with the Patriots, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

With the team having traded Jacoby Brissett prior to the start of the season and Jimmy Garoppolo earlier this week, the Patriots had a pressing need for a backup QB heading into their Week 9 bye. Hoyer, who played for New England from 2009-2011, brings familiarity with the organization, as well as NFL starting experience to the table, thus giving the Patriots a viable insurance option in the event of an injury to starter Tom Brady. Moreover, the duration of the 32-year-old's deal creates a scenario that could possibly lead to the franchise drafting a young QB this spring to develop.

Hoyer is slated to visit the Patriots on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

Hoyer, who was released by the 49ers earlier this week following the team's acquisition of Jimmy Garoppolo from the Patriots, began his NFL career in New England, where he played from 2009 through 2011. Assuming Hoyer signs with the Patriots as expected, he'll serve as QB Tom Brady's top backup.

Hoyer was released by the 49ers on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

Hoyer's release comes in the wake of San Francisco trading for ex-Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo earlier Monday evening. Since New England is now in need of a backup signal caller, it's certainly possible Hoyer could resurface with the team he started his career with back in 2009. Then again, one would think he would've been included in part of the trade in the first place if the Patriots had any interest in going down that avenue.

Hoyer was replaced as the 49ers' starting quarterback for C.J. Beathard after Sunday's 26-24 loss at Washington.

EDGE Analysis

When he got the hook during the second quarter, Hoyer was 4-for-11 passing for 34 yards. Meanwhile, C.J. Beathard led the 49ers to scores on four of his seven drives, completing 19 of 36 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception. With Hoyer expected to don a hat and clipboard moving forward, he's free to jettison in most formats.

Hoyer was benched in favor of C.J. Beathard in the second quarter of Sunday's game at Washington, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

EDGE Analysis

At the point of Hoyer's departure, the 49ers had two first downs and 39 total yards on four possessions. The move is another sign the 49ers are firmly invested in the development of their young talent, including Beathard, a 2017 third-round pick. Expect head coach Kyle Shanahan to elaborate on the quarterback situation in a post-game press conference.

Hoyer completed 29 of 46 pass attempts for 353 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Colts.

EDGE Analysis

Hoyer connected with nine different targets on the day as he delivered the second-highest yardage total of his career. He made several plays downfield, including a 51-yard strike to Marquise Goodwin, and added a pair of short touchdown tosses at the end of the fourth quarter to help force overtime. Hoyer has now delivered a pair of very productive outings through the season's first five weeks, but he has averaged just 175.3 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions in the other three games. He should face a tougher matchup next week against an improved Redskins defense.

Hoyer will remain the team's starter for Week 5 against the Colts, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

EDGE Analysis

Hoyer hasn't impressed over the first four games of the season -- throwing for two touchdowns compared to four interceptions -- but coach Kyle Shanahan remained content with Hoyer during his Monday press conference when the announcement was made. If Shanahan changes his mind at some later point in the season, rookie C.J. Beathard would be in line to take over.
