Hoyer was released by the 49ers on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer's release comes in the wake of San Francisco trading for ex-Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo earlier Monday evening. Since New England is now in need of a backup signal caller, it's certainly possible Hoyer could resurface with the team he started his career with back in 2009. Then again, one would think he would've been included in part of the trade in the first place if the Patriots had any interest in going down that avenue.

Hoyer was replaced as the 49ers' starting quarterback for C.J. Beathard after Sunday's 26-24 loss at Washington.
EDGE Analysis
When he got the hook during the second quarter, Hoyer was 4-for-11 passing for 34 yards. Meanwhile, C.J. Beathard led the 49ers to scores on four of his seven drives, completing 19 of 36 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown and one interception. With Hoyer expected to don a hat and clipboard moving forward, he's free to jettison in most formats.

Hoyer was benched in favor of C.J. Beathard in the second quarter of Sunday's game at Washington, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
At the point of Hoyer's departure, the 49ers had two first downs and 39 total yards on four possessions. The move is another sign the 49ers are firmly invested in the development of their young talent, including Beathard, a 2017 third-round pick. Expect head coach Kyle Shanahan to elaborate on the quarterback situation in a post-game press conference.

Hoyer completed 29 of 46 pass attempts for 353 yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Colts.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer connected with nine different targets on the day as he delivered the second-highest yardage total of his career. He made several plays downfield, including a 51-yard strike to Marquise Goodwin, and added a pair of short touchdown tosses at the end of the fourth quarter to help force overtime. Hoyer has now delivered a pair of very productive outings through the season's first five weeks, but he has averaged just 175.3 yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions in the other three games. He should face a tougher matchup next week against an improved Redskins defense.

Hoyer will remain the team's starter for Week 5 against the Colts, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer hasn't impressed over the first four games of the season -- throwing for two touchdowns compared to four interceptions -- but coach Kyle Shanahan remained content with Hoyer during his Monday press conference when the announcement was made. If Shanahan changes his mind at some later point in the season, rookie C.J. Beathard would be in line to take over.

Sun 10/1/17 9:04 PM

Hoyer completed 24 of 49 passes for 234 yards and an interception during Sunday's 18-15 overtime loss to the Cardinals. He added three rushing yards on his lone carry.
EDGE Analysis
If there are any positives to take away from Sunday's performance, it's that Hoyer left the game intact after getting his knee twisted up on in the first half. Otherwise, Hoyer was off-target seemingly all night -- though he wasn't helped by a few untimely drops by his receivers -- and has now thrown an interception in each game this season while reaching the end zone just once in four contests. He's nothing more than a desperation play in Week 4 despite his seemingly-soft matchup with the Colts.

Hoyer completed 23 of 37 passes for 332 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in Thursday's 41-39 loss to the Rams. He also gained nine yards and scored another touchdown on his sole rush.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer's impressive final line was due in overwhelmingly large part to the impressive connection he displayed with top target Pierre Garcon, and to a 50-yard hook-up with speedy No. 2 option Marquise Goodwin. However, his two scoring throws went elsewhere, as he tossed a one-yard touchdown to Garrett Celek early in the fourth quarter and then found rookie Trent Taylor from three yards out with 5:08 remaining. Hoyer couldn't connect with Taylor again when it counted most, though, as he misfired on a would-be game-tying two-point conversion pass with 2:13 remaining. Despite the disappointing final outcome, Hoyer's performance represented a significant step forward after he'd thrown for a combined 292 yards and no touchdowns through his first two games. He'll look to continue thriving in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense when the Niners face off with the Cardinals on the road in Week 4.

Hoyer completed 15 of 27 passes for 99 yards and one interception during Sunday's 12-9 loss to the Seahawks.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer's interception was particularly demoralizing, as it didn't even appear to be on target and instead went right into the hands of Seahawks MLB Bobby Wagner. If there's any silver lining to Sunday's events, it's that RB Carlos Hyde remained productive and efficient (124 yards on 15 carries) and offers hope the 49ers' passing game could open up more for Hoyer in coming weeks should opposing defenses stack the box more often.

Hoyer completed 24 of 35 passes for 193 yards and an interception during Sunday's 23-3 loss to the Panthers.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer was efficient, but that's probably the only positive that can be taken from Sunday's performance. With that said, most of his throws were high-percentage passes that he should've completed anyway and he ultimately finished the day with a dreadful 13.2 QBR. Next week won't be any easier when the 49ers travel to Seattle to take on a strong Seahawks pass defense.

Mon 8/28/17 12:07 AM

Hoyer completed 12 of 17 passes for 176 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 32-31 preseason loss to the Vikings.
EDGE Analysis
Hoyer was locked in during what was very likely his last game action of the preseason, connecting with the emerging Marquise Goodwin on a 46-yard scoring strike on the Niners' opening possession before hitting Carlos Hyde for a 24-yard touchdown in the second period. The performance was certainly one that helped validate Hoyer's standing as the starting quarterback, considering he'd been unable to generate much of anything in the first pair of exhibitions. With an excellent body of work under his belt, Hoyer is projected to sit out next Thursday's exhibition finale versus the Chargers in advance of the season opener against the Panthers.
