Bernard Scott (hand) was limited again in Thursday's practice.
Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden was kind enough to lay bare his thought process on Scott for Week 2. "Bernard still has to prove to us that he's ready to go, and that'll be a coach's decision," Gruden said. "Right now we're trying to work him back into the reps this week and if he doesn't play this week I think it will be good to get another week of practice for him. If he does play then I'd like to get him three or four series and see how he does."

Bernard Scott (hand) practiced on Wednesday.
Scott continues to work his way back into football shape. He's on track to be active as a change-of-pace option against the Browns in Week 2.

Bernard Scott (hand) could be ready for Week 2.
Scott's hand is healed, but he wasn't in good enough football shape to play against the Ravens. It sounds like he'll put in a full week of practice this week as the Bengals get set for the Browns on a short week. Starter BenJarvus Green-Ellis did put some separation in by impressively rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown Monday night. He gained positive yardage on all 18 of his carries.

Bengals declared RB Bernard Scott, CB Jason Allen, CB Dre Kirkpatrick, TE Donald Lee, WR Ryan Whalen, TE Richard Quinn, and DE Carlos Dunlap inactive for Week 1 against the Ravens.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis should handle all of the early-down work with Scott inactive. Brian Leonard will continue to play on third downs. Kirkpatrick is out with a knee injury, and the same goes for Bengals top pass rusher Dunlap.

Bernard Scott (hand) said he will not play in Monday's opener against the Ravens.
Scott is still working his way back into football shape after missing virtually all of training camp. We suspect he'll be ready for Week 2. BenJarvus Green-Ellis (foot) is coming off an injury of his own, but he figures to see a heavy workload in Week 1. Just don't expect much production against the Ravens' annually rugged run defense. Brian Leonard will handle his usual third-down role.

Bernard Scott (hand) returned to Bengals practice on Monday.
After missing all of camp and the preseason with a hand injury that required surgery, Scott appears set to return in Week 1. While his role may be minimal to start out, Scott will eventually be a drain on BenJarvus Green-Ellis' open-field touches. Scott is an end-of-the-bench roster stash in re-draft leagues.

Coach Marvin Lewis revealed that Bernard Scott's hand injury required surgery earlier this month.
Although Scott claims he will be ready for the opener, Lewis suggested his fate will be tied to the removal of screws and how quickly the tailback returns to form. "My eyes show me better than I hear," Lewis said. Scott is expected to be used in a "hot-hand" approach with BenJarvus Green-Ellis once he's ready for game action.

Bengals exec Duke Tobin suggested during the broadcast of Thursday's game that Bernard Scott's (hand) status for Week 1 remains up in the air.
Asked if his top two running backs would be ready for the season opener, Tobin replied, "I think BenJarvus Green-Ellis (foot) will be there. It's a little more iffy for Bernard Scott." Should Scott miss the opener, Green-Ellis will likely split touches with passing-down specialist Brian Leonard, who has been carrying the load in preseason action.

Bernard Scott (hand) has not played in either of the Bengals' first two preseason games.
It doesn't sound like Scott is going to play in tonight's game against the Packers either. And with BenJarvus Green-Ellis (toe) also sidelined, Brian Leonard is expected to get the start. Still, the Bengals have expressed no real concern over either injury, meaning we expect both backs to be ready to go come Week 1.
