Expect Smart to serve in his usual role as the Celtics' top reserve guard. The Oklahoma State guard closed the month of December averaging 8.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 steals in just under 29 minutes per game.

Smart played lock down defense while his backcourt mate, Isaiah Thomas, lit up the Heat for 52 points. Smart also sealed the win via two free throws with six seconds remaining. Unfortunately, his poor shooting continued. Smart is shooting an ugly 35.9% from the field this year, very close to his three year career average. Expect Smart to return to the bench on Tuesday versus the Jazz.

Smart will start at shooting guard in Friday's game against the Heat, Celtics radio play-by-play broadcaster Sean Grande reports.

Smart has averaged 26.3 minutes per game in eight contests since heading back to the bench after Isaiah Thomas' return from a groin injury, but he'll reenter the top unit Friday with Avery Bradley (illness) ruled out. The move to the starting five should enable Smart to flirt with a 35-minute workload, though Terry Rozier, who hasn't been in the rotation of late, is expected to absorb the bulk of Bradley's minutes. Smart's stint with the top unit may not last more than a game, as Bradley could be fully recovered in advance of the Celtics' next contest Tuesday against the Jazz.

Smart recorded 13 points (3-9 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 5-6 FT), six assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block across 29 minutes in a 113-103 win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday.

Smart had seen his playing time trend downward in Isaiah Thomas' first few games back from a groin injury, but he's now seen 28 and 29 minutes in back-to-back contests and produced well on both occasions. It looks like he'll continue to work primarily as the backup to Thomas at point guard while also occasionally seeing action off the ball, as second-year point guard Terry Rozier has been pushed out of the rotation of late.

Smart produced an efficient 15 points (5-9 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 3-4 FT), seven assists, two rebounds and one steal across 28 minutes in Sunday's Christmas Day 119-114 win versus the Knicks. "When Smart can post ones, it's different than posting on wings," said Coach Brad Stevens after the game.

Coach Stevens clearly wanted to exploit Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings' attempts at guarding Smart. The big minutes for Smart and Gerald Green led to Terry Rozier receiving his first DNP-CD of the season. Stevens loves to exploit matchups on a game-by-game basis. Smart owners should not expect such efficient shooting from Smart in the future as he's hit only 38% of his field goal attempts this December.

Smart moved back to the bench during Friday's 96-88 victory against Charlotte and scored five points (2-4 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-1 FT) and had seven rebounds and five assists across 24 minutes.

Smart had played pretty well as a starter in Isaiah Thomas' (groin) four-game absence, but settled back into his bench role Friday. Over the last six games, Smart has averaged 10.8 points, 5.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game. Off the bench, most of his value will come from rebounds, assists and steals.

Smart recorded 11 points (5-11 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 0-1 FT), nine assists, six rebounds and one steal in 36 minutes during Sunday's 99-96 loss to the Thunder.

Smart started his third straight game in place of Isaiah Thomas (groin) and scored in double-digits for the fourth straight game. The 22-year-old also contributed a game high in assists and led all Celtic guards in rebounds. While the Celtics hope to get Thomas back this week, Smart would be the main beneficiary if Thomas has to miss any additional time.

Smart tallied 12 points (3-11 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 3-5 FT), five assists and four rebounds across 36 minutes in Friday's 101-94 loss to the Raptors.
