Smith appeared in 42 games and made two starts for Dallas last season, but he's been relegated to the D-League in 2015-16. The forward has appeared in 17 games for the 905, averaging 12.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in just over 28 minutes per game. Those numbers certainly aren't flashy, but the Timberwolves are in search of a veteran presence, and Smith's previous NBA experience is more than most D-Leaguers can boast.

Smith averaged 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game in 42 games played with Dallas during the 2014-15 season. He failed to find minutes in a loaded Mavericks front court. Smith struggled to find playing time playing behind Tyson Chandler and Dirk Nowitzki and took another step back when the team acquired Amar'e Stoudemire. He will enter free agency in the offseason but remains a limited role player.

Smith was active for the first time this postseason but never left the bench in Tuesday's Game 2 loss to the Rockets. Smith was inactive for Game 1 but joined the active roster with Chandler Parsons (knee) and Devin Harris (toe) unable to suit up.

Smith was one of Dallas' two inactive players Wednesday, joining Dwight Powell as healthy scratches. Dallas fielded a healthy 15-man roster Wednesday, pushing Smith off the active lineup. He has played just seven total minutes since the beginning of March.
