The Grizzlies made Darrell Arthur a restricted FA on Friday, extending him a $3.0 million qualifying offer. Arthur is recovering from surgery to repair his Achilles, and Memphis is gambling on the promise he showed during the 2010-11 season, when he averaged 9.1 points (49.7 percent FGs, 81.3 percent FTs), 4.3 rebounds, 0.7 steals and 0.8 blocks in just 20 minutes per game.

Darrell Arthur (Achilles) had successful surgery to repair a torn tendon. Arthur is out for the season, but is expected to be ready for the start of the 2012-13 campaign. He'll have a long road of rehab ahead of him.

Darrell Arthur has a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the entire 2011-12 season. This is just bad news for both Arthur and the Grizzlies. It's a tough break to the big man and leaves Memphis with a lack of front court depth in a big way. Look for the Grizzlies to add another big man shortly, but nobody available in free agency will replace what Arthur brought to the table.

In the wake of Darrell Arthur's potentially season-ending Achilles injury, the Grizzlies are in the market for another backup big man. Memphis isn't going to find anyone as talented as Arthur, but they're looking at free agents like Walter Sharpe, Josh Davis and Brian Skinner. They have a full $5 million trade exception they could use, and they also have O.J. Mayo as a trade chip if they're willing to flip him for a big man.

Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur has seriously injured his Achilles tendon and is expected to miss the entire 2011-12 season. We're assuming Arthur tore his Achilles and needs surgery, which means he probably wouldn't be ready to resume playing for about a year, and wouldn't be full strength for even longer. It's a tough break for Memphis, whose frontcourt depth just took a hit.
