Alonso (back) is in Wednesday's lineup hitting fifth against the Giants, Padres' radio announcer Bob Scanlan reports. He had been out of the lineup for a couple days with a back issue but the rest appears to have helped and Alonso will slot into the middle of the Padres' order Wednesday. The 28-year-old first baseman is off to one of the best starts of his career, slashing .33/.415/.432 through 94 plate appearances.

Alonso (back) remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the Giants. Alonso has been nursing a sore back since being hit by a pitch Sunday and is now set to miss his second straight start. His availability off the bench is uncertain, as is his status for Wednesday's series finale against San Francisco. Yangervis Solarte will man first base in Alonso's absence.

Alonso (back), who is nursing a sore back after being hit by a pitch Sunday, may only be available as a defensive replacement Monday, Dennis Lin of the Union-Tribune reports. Alonso is not in the lineup Monday, which led to manager Bud Black sliding Yangervis Solarte over to first base. Lin noted that Alonso's back soreness may eliminate his availability to pinch hit Monday, but there's no indication that Alonso will miss significant time. He should be considered day-to-day for the time being.

Alonso got on base all four times up Thursday against the Rockies, knocking three singles and a walk while driving in a run. He was also caught stealing, which was perhaps ill advised, since speed isn't really a part of Alonso's game. Nonetheless, he's been very productive in the early going, with a 9:7 BB:K representing the best plate discipline of his career and a batting average that's sitting at an even .400 now. However, he'll need to show more power than he has in the past to remain a strong fantasy play at first base.

Alonso went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Monday's win over the Rockies. First base was viewed as one of the view remaining weaknesses for the Padres following an active offseason, but Alonso's performance so far this season has seemed to quell those concerns. While he's unsurprisingly showing limited power with only three extra-base hits (two doubles, one homer) through 13 games, Alonso's ability to hit for contact is a legitimate skill, and it seems to be paying dividends, as he's now upholding a .364 average. So long as fantasy owners aren't counting on him for substantial help in the home run and RBI categories, Alonso represents a worthy target for those looking for help in batting average stabilization.

Alonso will not be in the lineup Sunday against the Cubs. Manager Bud Black will shield Alonso from lefty Jon Lester, who is slated to toe the rubber for the Cubs. Alonso has surpassed expecations thus far with a .342/.457/.474 batting line on the season, which resulted in him moving up in the order to the two-hole in Saturday's 11-inning loss. Though he'll be replaced by Yangervis Solarte and could still be at risk of falling into a platoon, Alonso could bring some utility in the runs and batting average categories whenever he's in the lineup.

Alonso is out of the Padres' lineup Saturday. Yangervis Solarte will move across the diamond to man first base as Alonso gets his first day off of 2015. The early returns on the Padres' starting first baseman have been excellent this season, as he has a .471 average with four walks and a steal through five games. He has just one extra-base hit, but power was never a big part of Alonso's game. With a fortunate BABIP year he could approach a .290 average with plenty of runs and RBI.
