Calhoun is not a lock to make the final 25-man roster as the Rangers will send him to the minors if they decide to keep eight relievers or if they don't want third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera to also serve as the backup shortstop and second baseman, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun is hitting just .216 with a .598 OPS this spring while getting significant playing time (43 plate appearances). It sounds like he'll begin the season in the minors with the Rangers already planning to keep five outfield/DH types in Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara, Shin-Soo Choo, Hunter Pence and Delino DeShields.

Calhoun went 0-for-2 Wednesday and is now 4-for-23 (.174) this spring.
EDGE Analysis
The Rangers are giving Calhoun every chance to hit his way onto the Opening Day roster; he leads the team in spring plate appearances. It appears that they don't want to keep him on the roster as a part-time player, however, which could lead him back to Triple-A to begin the year if he doesn't earn a starting job.

Calhoun has dropped 13 or 14 pounds this offseason, well on the way to his goal of dropping 20 pounds by spring training, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun has long been viewed as an interesting bat, but his body had mostly limited him to designated hitter, giving him a very high bar to clear offensively. Cutting weight could help him in the field and give him a clearer path to playing time. Of course, defense requires both skill and athleticism, so a trimmer body won't solve all his problems on that side of the ball. Additionally, his .233/.283/.338 line in the big leagues is nowhere close to good enough for any position, let alone a designated hitter, though that's come in a relatively small sample of just 145 plate appearances, so there's still time for him to improve.

Calhoun started in left field and went 0-for-2 in Friday's win over the Mariners.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun got the start under interim manager Don Wakamatsu, who will guide the Rangers over the final 10 games after previous manager Jeff Banister was fired Friday. Calhoun was not getting consistent at-bats under Banister, so his start Friday could signal a shift under Wakamatsu, or it could have been a matchup opportunity for the left-handed hitting outfielder against a right-handed starter (Erasmo Ramirez).

Calhoun went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Monday's loss to the Rays.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun filled in for Joey Gallo, who was scratched with a bruised right toe. Gallo's injury gave Calhoun a chance for consecutive starts, the first time he's started two games in a row since his September callup. If Gallo's injury lingers, the Rangers will likely have Calhoun continue to fill in. Manager Jeff Banister would like to give Calhoun consistent at-bats, but faces a squeeze in the outfield, particularly where Calhoun is limited to left field only.

Calhoun went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Padres.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun got the start in left field, just his third start since a Sept. 4 callup from Triple-A Round Rock. His second-inning homer broke an 0-for-9 stretch since the callup. Manager Jeff Banister told Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News that he wants to give Calhoun more at-bats over the final two weeks of the season, but doesn't plan to bench any of his consistent regulars to accomplish that.

Calhoun identified losing weight as his main offseason goal, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun came to spring training at 215 pounds, heavier than the Rangers expected. That excess baggage may have set the tone for a season he acknowledged has been an "emotional roller coaster." Calhoun wanted badly to make the major-league roster coming out of camp, but the Rangers were not impressed with his defense and baserunning and didn't hit his way onto the season-opening roster. He sees a drop in weight as one part of a plan to improve in those areas of the game. Manager Jeff Banister said Calhoun's weight was not a determining factor in the decision to send him to the minors for the start of the season, but cited the need for better defense and baserunning as two offseason projects for the outfielder. "To play at this level, the improvements we talked about were on the defensive side, on baserunning and on overall decision-making," Banister said. "To stay on the field here, you have to maintain a certain body strength level. Going into the offseason, that's probably one of things we will talk about is continuing to strengthen his body."

Calhoun will be called up to Texas on Tuesday, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Unfortunately, there won't be regular at-bats for Calhoun, whose defense limits him to left field only. The Rangers are overloaded with young corner outfielders as Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo need at-bats as much as Calhoun does. He could serve as a designated hitter, but opportunities there are scarce with Shin-Soo Choo and Adrian Beltre on the roster. Calhoun hit .275 with a .716 OPS over 69 major-league at-bats earlier this year.

Calhoun will return to the Rangers when rosters expand on Sept. 1, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports.
EDGE Analysis
This confirms what was presumed Thursday when the Rangers sent Calhoun down to Triple-A Round Rock to make room for the returning Nomar Mazara. Manager Jeff Banister said there is a glut of left-hander hitters and left-fielder/designated hitters, so it was best to let Calhoun play every day for Round Rock. If an injury hits before roster expansion, Calhoun could return sooner. The 23-year-old outfielder held his own in the majors, hitting .275/.325/.391 over 77 plate appearances.

Calhoun was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Calhoun's stay in the majors coincided with Nomar Mazara's stay on the disabled list. The 23-year-old hit a fine .275/.325/.391 through 22 games during his first stint with the Rangers this season. He'll head back to the minors for the time being, though he should be back up once rosters expand in September.
