Mahle (shoulder soreness) has been traveling with the Reds on their current road trip and throwing on the side, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.

Mahle might get in a relief outing before the end of the season, but is unlikely to start. "He's throwing his side sessions and all that," interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "Whether he starts again, I don't know. If he gets a couple of innings of relief, we might be able to do it in a simulated situation as opposed to a game situation to [help] him confirm in his own mind, 'Yeah, I feel great going into the offseason and do my normal offseason program to get ready for next year.'"

Reliever Michael Lorenzen will fill Mahle's spot in the rotation for at least Tuesday's game in Milwaukee and could garner additional starts if he impresses in the transition from the bullpen. Mahle was expected to take the mound this weekend against the Cubs, but interim manager Jim Riggleman elected to bypass the right-hander and go with Matt Harvey, Cody Reed and Luis Castillo in Chicago. Anthony DeSclafani will take the mound during Monday's series opener in Milwaukee, which likely leaves Mahle in line to pitch Tuesday.

Mahle threw three innings Sunday, yielding two runs on five hits and three walks in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Reds. He allowed a home run and struck out five in the no-decision.
