Mahle (shoulder soreness) has been traveling with the Reds on their current road trip and throwing on the side, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle might get in a relief outing before the end of the season, but is unlikely to start. "He's throwing his side sessions and all that," interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "Whether he starts again, I don't know. If he gets a couple of innings of relief, we might be able to do it in a simulated situation as opposed to a game situation to [help] him confirm in his own mind, 'Yeah, I feel great going into the offseason and do my normal offseason program to get ready for next year.'"

Mahle experienced shoulder tenderness following his Sept. 9 start against the Padres and faces an uncertain return timeline, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Reliever Michael Lorenzen will fill Mahle's spot in the rotation for at least Tuesday's game in Milwaukee and could garner additional starts if he impresses in the transition from the bullpen. Interim manager Jim Riggleman said that Mahle, meanwhile, is working with team trainers with the hope of being able to pitch again in 2018. The start against San Diego has been Mahle's only appearance since rejoining the big club when rosters expanded earlier this month. Mahle has covered 112 innings in total for the Reds this season, logging a 4.98 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 8.8 K/9.

Mahle could be skipped in the rotation after getting his next start pushed back, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle was expected to take the mound this weekend against the Cubs, but interim manager Jim Riggleman elected to bypass the right-hander and go with Matt Harvey, Cody Reed and Luis Castillo in Chicago. Anthony DeSclafani will take the mound during Monday's series opener in Milwaukee, which likely leaves Mahle in line to pitch Tuesday.

Mahle threw three innings Sunday, yielding two runs on five hits and three walks in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Reds. He allowed a home run and struck out five in the no-decision.
EDGE Analysis
The only damage to Mahle came from a two-run blast off the bat of Austin Hedges. Unfortunately, Lucas Sims got knocked around for four runs after Mahle was lifted. The 23-year-old's ERA now sits at 4.98 in 112 innings this season after Sunday's outing, his first MLB appearance since Aug. 2. He'll take on the Cubs in Chicago on Saturday as he looks for his first win since July 6.

Mahle will start Sunday against the Padres, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle is taking the place of Homer Bailey in the Reds' rotation and initially appeared line dup to start Monday against the Dodgers, but he hasn't pitched since Aug. 30 so he'll be bumped up a day. He allowed 20 earned runs in 10.2 innings over his last four big-league starts but may have righted the ship at Triple-A Louisville, as he posted a 2.73 ERA there in five starts after an early-August demotion.

Mahle will take Homer Bailey's spot in the Reds' starting rotation, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle currently lines up to pitch Monday against the Dodgers, but the Reds could opt to start him over the weekend as he hasn't seen game action since Aug. 30 with Triple-A Louisville. The 23-year-old was having a solid rookie campaign through his first 18 starts -- 3.66 ERA and 1.39 WHIP -- but allowed 22 runs (20 earned) over his last four starts (10.2 innings) before being sent down in early August.

Mahle was recalled by the Reds on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle recorded a solid 3.66 ERA in his first 18 starts of the season before suddenly collapsing and getting shelled for a 16.87 ERA over his last four, earning him a demotion to Triple-A Louisville. He's back up for September, though it's not yet clear if he'll reclaim a rotation spot or will be forced to pitch in a long-relief role.

Mahle was sent down to Triple-A Louisville on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The Reds will trim their six-man rotation down to five and Mahle will deservedly lose out. Over his last four starts, he's lasted a total of 10.2 innings, giving up 22 runs (20 earned). Prior to that point, he had a 3.66 ERA in 98.1 innings, so there remains hope that he can sort things out at the minor-league level and be back in Cincinnati before the end of the year.

Mahle could lose his rotation spot soon, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon speculates. The Reds are using a six-man rotation right now and want to discontinue that, and Mahle is going through a really awful stretch.
EDGE Analysis
Because the Reds didn't trade Matt Harvey by Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline, there remain six starters. But with Mahle struggling so much, he's changed where he's pitching on the mound, and that experiment didn't work. He might be better served trying to fix whatever's wrong down in Triple-A.

Mahle (7-9) lasted just 1.2 innings Thursday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks in the 10-4 loss to Washington. He struck out just one batter and took the loss.
EDGE Analysis
Mahle threw a perfect first inning before getting torched for all six earned runs in the second. The 23-year-old rookie has been dreadful as of late, allowing 22 runs (20 earned) across just 10.2 innings in his last four starts. His rough stretch has raised his season ERA from 3.66 to an unsightly 4.95. He'll look to turn things around with a better matchup against the Mets on Tuesday.
