Sergio Santos struck out the side in his inning against the Red Sox on Friday. Santos walked one and threw two wild pitches, so he wasn't flawless. Now that Casey Janssen is back, Santos's chances of opening the season in the closer's role have likely diminished.

Sergio Santos surrendered a two-run homer in his inning of work against the Astros on Tuesday. Santos pitched a perfect inning Saturday in his return from some triceps soreness, but he allowed a single and then a homer to Jason Castro today. He's left the door open for Casey Janssen to hold on to the closer's role in Toronto.

Back from some triceps soreness, Sergio Santos pitched a perfect inning Saturday against the Orioles. Santos also pitched in a minor league game Thursday. Despite the setback, he's still a possibility to open the season in the closer's role for Toronto. After all, Casey Janssen (shoulder) still hasn't made his first spring appearance.

Sergio Santos (triceps) threw 18 pitches in a minor league game Thursday with no issues. He'll make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday before appearing in back-to-back outings at some point late next week. "I don't foresee anything why I shouldn't be ready for Opening Day," Santos said. "If Opening Day was next week, I feel like I would be ready. So from my standpoint, the way I see it now, I feel like I am 100 percent ready moving on from here." Casey Janssen (shoulder) is less sure of being ready for the opener, so Santos could see some save chances.

Sergio Santos (triceps) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no issues. It's the first time he's thrown from the bump since being removed from a game last Sunday with soreness in his triceps. It's not clear when Santos will be ready for game action, but it shouldn't be long.

Sergio Santos (triceps) is expected to play catch Friday. Santos felt soreness in his triceps after an outing on Sunday, so he has taken things easy over the past couple of days. He actually wanted to play catch Thursday, but the Blue Jays nixed that idea. If all goes well, he could return to game action Tuesday.

Sergio Santos felt soreness in his triceps Sunday night after an outing against the Phillies. Santos will be held out of Grapefruit League action until Saturday. "Nothing yet that we're too alarmed about because there's still so much spring left," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

Sergio Santos gave up his first run of the spring Sunday against the Phillies. It would have been worse, except a heads-up Santos snuck in behind Yuniesky Betancourt rounding third on a hit and tagged him for the second out of the inning. While Santos seemed to be gaining ground in the closer competition with the still sidelined Casey Janssen, today's performance was a bit of a setback.

With an impressive performance early on in the spring, Sergio Santos is gaining momentum in his attempt at reclaiming the Blue Jays' closer role from Casey Janssen. Janssen entered the spring as the favorite to keep the job, but he has struggled to recover from minor offseason shoulder surgery. With the door now open, look for the hard-throwing Santos to reclaim the job that was rightfully his before going down with an injury of his own last season.

Sergio Santos needed just six pitches to throw a perfect inning Sunday versus the Orioles. Santos was making his spring debut after shoulder problems limited him to six appearances last season. It sounds like he'll serve as Casey Janssen's setup man initially, but it'd be no surprise if he seizes the closer's role in Toronto at some point.
