Newcomb was traded from Atlanta to Chicago at the start of the 2022 season, finding minimal success with a 8.78 ERA and 1.88 WHIP over 27.2 innings in the majors. However, his 3.38 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in Triple-A Iowa may be enough for another team to take a chance on the 29-year-old lefty going into 2023.

Newcomb came into the contest pitching well lately with a 2.16 ERA across eight appearances since shifting to a bullpen role earlier this month. That all came crashing down Sunday, and the lefty saw his ERA for the month jump all the way to 7.71. Considering that Newcomb had a 4.73 ERA for Atlanta last year and an 11.20 ERA during the shortened 2020 campaign, it seemed like a matter of time until he endured some struggles in his new relief role with the Cubs.

Newcomb has a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 12 strikeouts across 8.1 innings since shifting to a bullpen role earlier this month.

EDGE Analysis

Newcomb earned the win in relief Friday, improving to 2-0 this season. The lefty allowed two earned runs across three innings in a spot start back on Aug. 4, but he's allowed only two earned runs total across his eight relief appearances since then. Newcomb had some success as a starter in Atlanta earlier in his career before enduring some struggles the past few years, so it remains to be seen if he can sustain his recent form for an extended period of time.

Newcomb struck out two and worked around a hit and a walk to deliver a scoreless inning in relief in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Marlins.

Newcomb's previous appearance with the Cubs had come as a starter in the second game of the team's doubleheader with the Cardinals on Thursday, when the southpaw took a no-decision after giving up two earned runs across three innings. Since the Cubs transitioned back into a five-man rotation following the doubleheader, Newcomb looks set to operate as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen for the duration of his stay on the active roster.

Newcomb didn't factor into the decision during a 7-2 loss to St. Louis in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout in three innings.

Making his first start since 2020, Newcomb surrendered a Nolan Arenado two-run home run in the first inning while letting runners reach second base in each of his ensuing frames but was able to escape the jams. The 56 pitches eclipsed the 44 he tossed in his most recent outing June 12, and the two runs surrendered actually dropped the 29-year-old's ERA to 10.22 across 12.1 innings. It appears unlikely Newcomb will remain with the big-league club barring injury.
