Suarez came in to relieve Jason Adam with two men on and two outs and got out of it clean. He reentered in the ninth protecting a four-run lead and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a single in the inning to pick up his first save in over a week. Tuesday's strong effort comes on the heels of arguably the roughest outing of the year for Suarez. He managed to punch out multiple batters in an outing for the first time since Aug. 8 and pitched more than three outs for the first time since July 26. He's now up to 32 saves to compliment a stellar 2.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB in 58 innings this year.

Suarez (8-3) took the loss and blew a save against the Tigers on Thursday, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning.

Suarez entered Thursday having successfully converted eight straight save chances, but he didn't have his best stuff against Detroit. The right-hander had a three-run lead to work with in the top of the ninth and found himself in quick trouble, giving up a leadoff single followed by a walk. Suarez retired Spencer Torkelson on a popup but then issued another walk to load the bases. It looked like the closer might get out of the jam when he fanned Kerry Carpenter for the second out, but Parker Meadows followed with a grand slam on a 3-2 fastball to push the Tigers into the lead. Suarez was then lifted, and he was charged with the loss when San Diego was unable to score in the bottom of the frame. He's been great with 31 saves in 35 opportunities on the season but has faded a bit over the past month, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 13 innings while giving up at least one earned run in six of 14 appearances since Aug. 3. If San Diego were to consider moving Suarez out of the closer role for any period of time, Tanner Scott -- who has 20 saves (mostly with Miami) and a 1.44 ERA on the campaign -- would be a very capable fill-in.

It wasn't a blown save -- Suarez was called upon to keep the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he couldn't get the job done. Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off single to hand Suarez his first loss since June 18. With five runs allowed over his last 8.2 innings, Suarez is one of his shakiest stretches of the season, though he's converted all five of his save chances in that span.
