Diamondbacks purchased the contract of SS Nick Ahmed from Triple-A Reno. He's taking Chris Owings' (shoulder) spot on the roster. Ahmed is known for his glove but sports a .324/.390/.431 batting line at Reno this season. The 24-year-old figures to share time at shortstop with Didi Gregorius while Owings is out.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Diamondbacks have been receiving calls from teams on the availability of shortstop prospect Nick Ahmed. Ahmed was acquired from the Braves in the January 2013 blockbuster trade headlined by Justin Upton. The 24-year-old is hitting .304/.385/.401 and playing high-level defense this season at Triple-A Reno, but he's blocked in Arizona by Chris Owings. The Diamondbacks (29-39 as of June 12) might want to deal from that surplus and fill other areas of organizational need. Ahmed was a second-round pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft.
