Mike Pelfrey (groin) returned from his rehab assignment on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness. That's not a good sign. Pelfrey had been improving after being placed on the DL with a groin strain, so the shoulder issue is a new development. Pelfrey will be examined by team doctors on Wednesday, and more should be known about any new injuries and a possible timetable for return from those ailments.

Mike Pelfrey will make a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Rochester. Pelfrey will throw around 60 pitches in the start, his first since hitting the disabled list on May 2. He'll have 30 days to rehab before being required to be activated, and the Twins will likely take their time to ensure the 30-year-old makes it back healthy.

Mike Pelfrey (groin) threw a bullpen session Tuesday. It's another step in the right direction for Pelfrey, who was placed on the disabled list May 2 with a left groin strain. The 30-year-old had a 7.99 ERA and 18 walks through his first 23 2/3 innings this season, so the Twins probably won't rush him back.

Mike Pelfrey (groin) continues to improve and increase activity. Pelfrey was placed on the disabled list last week with a left groin strain. He's making progress, but might return as a reliever. The 30-year-old has an ugly 7.99 ERA and 18 walks through 23 2/3 innings this season.

Twins placed RHP Mike Pelfrey on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain. It can be debated as to whether he's really hurt, as Pelfrey had been poised to be removed from the rotation, anyway. Regardless, he's out and Samuel Deduno is in the Twins' rotation. It's not clear how long Pelfrey will be sidelined.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire acknowledged after another poor outing from Mike Pelfrey Thursday that the right-hander could be moved to the bullpen. Pelfrey surrendered five runs in four innings to the Dodgers and how has a 7.99 ERA with 18 walks over 23 2/3 frames this season. "It's frustrating," Gardenhire said. "He reverted back to the pace thing and didn't throw it over enough. We were on the field a lot and he threw 85 pitches in four innings. So we just have to figure out what we need to do next and where we need to go next. We'll sit down and talk with the pitching coach, the pitcher and everybody involved to see where we go with this." Samuel Deduno threw four relief innings following Pelfrey Thursday and Gardy indicated that Deduno is a candidate to move into the rotation. "Sammy is fine," Gardenhire said. "He just has to get into a routine, too. We stretched him out pretty good today and we'll make a decision here."

Mike Pelfrey fell to 0-3 after giving up five runs in four innings Thursday against the Dodgers. Pelfrey allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out two. He's walked a total of 18 batters in 23 2/3 innings, which is a ridiculous number for a flame-throwing rookie, much less a veteran sinkerballer. The Twins need to do something with him, whether it's sticking him on the DL for a few weeks or sending him to the pen.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Saturday that Mike Pelfrey is available out of the bullpen for Saturday's contest against the Tigers. He'd only be used as an emergency option. With the Twins bullpen severely overworked in recent days, it's an all hands on deck approach instead of making a roster move to recall another reliever from Triple-A.

Mike Pelfrey allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings and took the no-decision as the Twins defeated the Rays in 12 innings on Wednesday. Pelfrey took the mound in the sixth inning but was removed after allowing a single and hitting a batter. Overall, Pelfrey allowed six hits, walked three, and struck out one. The right-hander has not been reliable for the Twins over four starts, as he has a 7.32 ERA with a 8/15 K/BB ratio. He'll have a tough match-up in the Dodgers in his next start.

Mike Pelfrey gave up five runs -- four earned -- in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a no-decision versus the Blue Jays. Pelfrey showed better stuff this spring than he did at any point during 2013, but it hasn't translated into regular-season results; he's given up 13 earned runs and walked 12 over 14 2/3 innings in his three starts. As limited as his upside is, the Twins should go ahead and send him to the pen if he doesn't rebound in his next couple of starts.
