The only blemish on his outing was a sixth inning home run to Ender Inciarte, but outside of that, Montgomery never really had any trouble spots. It's doubtful that he'll make another start for a while now that Kyle Hendricks (finger) is expected to return to the rotation next week, but this outing certainly will instill some confidence in the Cubs' brass the next time they need a spot starter.

This was the first time in any of his five starts that he's allowed more than three earned runs, and he boasts a 2.80 ERA, making him a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners during his stint in the Cubs starting rotation. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Brewers.

It's worth noting that his eligibility as a reliever can be a sneaky bonus in some fantasy settings, and Montgomery is also now stretched out to pitch deeper into games. Still, his run as a starter could be fleeting, as the Cubs are candidates to beef up their rotation before the trade deadline. Montgomery projects to face the Reds at Great American Ball Park in his next start.

Montgomery (1-3) picked up his first win of the year Tuesday, holding the Padres scoreless on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.

EDGE Analysis

With a 2.26 ERA and 1.24 WHIP through 51.2 innings, Montgomery looks relatively attractive on the surface, but the numbers aren't so pretty when you dig deeper. His 6.8 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 are both subpar figures, and Montgomery has gotten lucky in terms of both BABIP and HR/FB rate. The lefty's done a great job keeping the ball on the ground, but even so, he won't be able to outpitch his peripherals forever.

EDGE Analysis

Montgomery's put up middling results in his first couple starts of 2017, and his 35:24 K:BB isn't all that supportive of his 2.56 season ERA. Nonetheless, the lefty's likely to hold a rotation spot for at least one more start yet, as Kyle Hendricks' recovery from a hand injury has hit a snag.

Kyle Hendricks (hand) was placed on the disabled list Thursday, leaving a vacancy in the Cubs' rotation. Montgomery will fill that void for now, facing off with German Marquez of Colorado. The left-hander very well could stick in the rotation for another turn or two depending on the severity of Hendricks' ailment, although it appears to merely be a one-start assignment at this point.
