Michael Pineda has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of his teres major muscle.
It's the same injury that Clayton Kershaw had, which has cost him over a month of action. Pineda, who is in the midst of serving a 10-game suspension for his use of pine tar, will obviously not make his next scheduled start on Monday now and figures to miss a few more after that. David Phelps will fill in until Pineda is ready.

Michael Pineda had to halt a simulated game on Tuesday after experiencing tightness in his right lat.
Pineda was expected to return from his 10-game pine tar suspension on Monday to face the Angels, but that might not happen now. The Yankees will run some tests.

Michael Pineda is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday in an effort to maintain his normal routine and stay sharp during his suspension.
He threw a bullpen on Sunday and will throw another during the week after his simulated game. It hasn't been announced yet on which day he'll return to the Yankees rotation, but it's expected to be during their series against the Angels in Los Angeles beginning on May 5.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Michael Pineda has been suspended 10 games for using pine tar in his start Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Pineda had a big streak of pine tar on his neck on a blistery night at Fenway Park and was ejected by home plate umpire Gerry Davis with two outs in the second inning. His turn only comes up one time in the next 17 games due to conveniently-scheduled off days, so it's not a major hit to the Yankees. Pineda admitted after his start Wednesday that he was using pine tar and apologized for it. He boasts a 1.83 ERA in 19 2/3 frames this year.

Michael Pineda was ejected in the second inning of Wednesday's game for having a foreign substance on his neck.
Two starts ago -- against the same Red Sox club -- Pineda made news for what appeared to be a foreign substance on his hand. When questioned about the substance after that start, Pineda called it "dirt." Fool me once, shame one you, but Red Sox manager John Farrell wasn't going to be fooled again. Pineda could be in for a suspension as a result of the ejection.

Michael Pineda allowed four hits over six innings as the Yankees shut out the Cubs 2-0 in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
The Yankees shut out the Cubs in both ends of the doubleheader. Pineda picked up his second win by throwing 89 pitches on a chilly evening. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out three. Obviously, he shouldn't be unowned in any mixed leagues at this point.

Michael Pineda pitched six innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox and struck out seven in a win over the Red Sox on Thursday.
Pineda spent most of the outing working with an obvious foreign substance on his hand, but no one involved seemed to care. Oddly enough, the guy he was matched up against, Clay Buchholz, was involved in a similar non-scandal last year. Pineda was sharp again, essentially matching his first-week outing against the Blue Jays. He's looking like a legitimate mixed-league starter right now.

Michael Pineda did solid work against the Blue Jays on Sunday, allowing three runs -- two earned -- and six hits over six innings.
Pineda struck out two and walked none. The Yankees still haven't announced Pineda as their fifth starter, even though he's thrown well enough to earn the job. They may still be debating whether it makes sense to go with him in April when he's not going to be allowed to throw 180 innings over the course of the season.

Michael Pineda shut out the Red Sox for 4 1/3 innings and struck out five on Tuesday.
Pineda's velocity was again mostly in the 89-92 mph range today, but he had his best slider so far this spring. He's made a nice case for a rotation spot with nine scoreless innings and 14 strikeouts in three outings. If the Yankees decide to send him down anyway, it'll be only because they want to monitor his innings count this year.
