The Mets elected to adjust reorder their rotation following Monday's off day, so Scherzer will remain on four days' rest and take the hill Wednesday for what would have been David Peterson's day to pitch. Though Scherzer will miss out on a more favorable matchup this weekend in Miami, fantasy managers were already likely keeping the three-time Cy Young Award winner active regardless of his opponent. He enters Wednesday's contest with a 2.28 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 98:13 K:BB across 75 innings on the season.

Scherzer (6-2) took the loss Friday, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over six innings as the Mets fell 4-1 to the Padres. He struck out eight.

The veteran right-hander made only one real mistake in his pitchers' duel with Yu Darvish, but Eric Hosmer took it the other way for a two-run home run and the Mets' offense couldn't come up with a response. Scherzer has now reeled off four straight quality starts since coming off the IL at the beginning of the month, posting a 1.78 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and eye-popping 39:2 K:BB through 25.1 innings over that stretch.

Scherzer allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Making his first start since May 18 due to an oblique strain, Scherzer took out his pent-up frustrations on Cincinnati hitters, setting a new season high in Ks while firing 57 of 79 pitches for strikes, including 15 swinging strikes. Unfortunately for the right-hander, the Mets' offense didn't show up to support him. His return comes just in time for a tattered New York rotation that's missing five other potential members at the moment, including Jacob deGrom (shoulder), Tylor Megill (shoulder) and Chris Bassitt (COVID-19), and Scherzer will take a 2.26 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 70:11 K:BB through 55.2 innings into his next outing.

Reliever Chasen Shreve was designated for assignment to clear space on the 26-man active roster for Scherzer, who was sidelined for just over six weeks with a strained left oblique muscle. The right-hander completed two minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated and is targeting around six innings or 90 pitches in his return to the big-league rotation Tuesday. If all goes well, Scherzer will line up to make his second start of the week against the Marlins on Sunday, when he shouldn't face any restrictions.

However, the adjustment will presumably take Scherzer out of the mix from returning from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's series finale versus the Rangers. As long as Scherzer pitches for Binghamton on Wednesday and checks out fine following the outing, he'll tentatively line up to come off the IL and make a start in Cincinnati on Independence Day.
