Holliday is 8-for-19 (.421) with a home run thus far in Grapefruit League action.
EDGE Analysis
The Yankees inked the 37-year-old to a one-year deal over the offseason, and the club has to be pleased with what they've seen so far in the spring. The expectation is that Holliday -- who has mashed at least 20 home runs in 10 of the last 11 seasons -- will serve as the regular DH and backup first baseman, though the late offseason acquisition of Chris Carter could end up cutting into those roles a bit.

Holliday signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Yankees on Sunday, Sweeny Murti of WFAN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holliday will head to New York after spending seven seasons and part of another in St. Louis. He appeared in just 183 total games over the last few seasons, so playing for an American League where he can serve as the designated hitter could help his durability next season. He figures to spend most of his time at that spot, but could see spot action at first base and in the outfield as well.

The Cardinals have elected not to exercise the team option on Holliday's contract for 2017, and he is now a free agent, Today's Knuckleball reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Cardinals announced late in the regular season that they were not planning to pick up Holliday's $17 million option, and the team made the move official Friday. Holliday hit just .246 last season, but he still posted a .783 OPS thanks to 41 extra-base hits. It remains to be seen what type of interest he will garner on the free agent market, but he was limited to just 183 games over the last two seasons and will turn 37 in January, so he may opt to head to an American League team where he can spend some time as the designated hitter.

Holliday (thumb) was activated from the DL on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The seven-time All-Star is not expected to start this weekend but he will get a chance to say goodbye to the fans in St. Louis with one final pinch-hit at-bat. Holliday's long tenure with the Cardinals will come to an end after this season, as the team has decided to decline his option for 2017.

Holliday (thumb) will be activated from the DL, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holliday isn't ready to return to a starting role, but the Cardinals will activate him so he can soak in the adoration of the home fans in one final (pinch hit) at-bat. The Cardinals are expected to decline Holliday's option for 2017, allowing him to hit the open market.

The Cardinals are "ready to activate" Holliday (thumb) from the DL, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
As of earlier this week, it was considered unlikely that Holliday would return to action this season as the thumb has not held up well in live BP. While he may be activated after all, it's uncertain what kind of role he'll play over the final weekend. Holliday could end up just making a pinch-hit appearance or two so the fans in St. Louis can show their appreciation for his contributions to the team over the years. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports is reporting that the Cardinals do not plan to pick up Holliday's option or extend him a qualifying offer this winter.

Holliday (thumb) seems "doubtful" to return to action this season, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
EDGE Analysis
Holliday has been on the shelf since Aug. 12, and after seemingly experiencing a setback during a batting practice session Friday, he appears to be moving further from a return rather than closer. The Cardinals have not completely ruled him out for the season, but things certainly don't look good for the veteran outfielder.

Holliday (thumb) will meet with a specialist Monday before another live batting practice session, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold reports.
EDGE Analysis
Friday's batting practice session obviously did not go completely as planned, as the need to see a specialist suggests he's had something of a setback. He is running out of games at this point, as it now seems that the earliest he could return would be in the middle of next week.

Holliday (thumb) took batting practice at Wrigley Field on Friday, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.
EDGE Analysis
It sounds like Holliday is getting closer to being able to return to game action, although he remains without a firm timetable. It's worth monitoring his status this weekend, as batting practice should be one of the final hurdles for him to clear.

Holliday chose not to participate in a simulated game Saturday due to too much swelling around his right thumb, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
He seemed optimistic earlier in the week about possibly returning soon, but Holliday was forced to pump the brakes Saturday and delay his first live batting practice session. The next step for Holliday is up in the air, but time is running out for him to make it back onto the field this season.
