Chapman will bat cleanup and play third base Friday against the Angels, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chapman has only faced slight limitations to start camp as he works his way back from September hip surgery. He's already played in two Cactus League games, though he was limited to designated hitter duties in both. He'll take field with just shy of four weeks remaining until Opening Day, which should leave little doubt that he'll be up to full speed by the start of the regular season.

Chapman could play third base during Friday's Cactus League matchup if he feels good after Wednesday's game, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chapman will serve as the designated hitter once again during Wednesday's matchup against the Rockies as the team continues to ease him back into action following offseason hip surgery. Assuming he checks out fine after Wednesday's game, he's expected to make his defensive debut after Thursday's off day. The 27-year-old has gone 1-for-3 with a double and one strikeout to begin Cactus League play.

Chapman started at designated hitter and doubled in three at-bats during Monday's Cactus League win over the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
The Athletics had already announced their intentions of easing Chapman back into his third-base role after offseason hip surgery, so the start at DH wasn't unexpected. The 27-year-old laced a thunderous two-bagger in his final at-bat before calling it an afternoon, and Martin Gallegos of MLB.com notes Chapman is slated to make his defensive debut following Oakland's off day Thursday.

Chapman isn't expected to take the field for the Athletics' first few spring games but will serve as the designated hitter, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chapman has been fully cleared for workouts to start camp as he works his way back from September hip surgery, but the team will bring him along slowly in game action. Barring setbacks, he'll still have more than enough time to prepare for Opening Day.

Chapman arrived at the Athletics spring training facility Thursday and looked to be in excellent shape while taking grounders from manager Bob Melvin, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "I hit him some ground balls yesterday and I didn't see anything different," Melvin said during a Zoom call on Friday. "We just gave him a few. I didn't make him go too far, but he's eager. It's going to be more trying to hold him back than trying to get him ready."
EDGE Analysis
Chapman's strong work ethic makes his early arrival -- position players aren't required to report until Monday -- wholly unsurprising, especially when considering the Gold Glove third baseman was likely anxious to perform a status check on his mobility following last year's hip surgery. Not only did the 27-year-old seem to have as good a range as he did pre-surgery according to Melvin, but he also appeared trimmer following an arduous post-op rehab schedule. Melvin noted Friday his biggest concern regarding the extremely diligent Chapman will be tempering the latter's drive to push himself, with part of the likely load management plan involving having him log some at-bats at designated hitter in early Cactus League action.

Chapman, who had hip surgery in September, is not expected to have any restrictions when the Athletics begin full-squad workouts next Monday, Shayna Rubin of The Mercury News reports.
EDGE Analysis
The slugging third baseman recently posted video of his rehab work at Southern California facility ProSport on his personal Instagram account, where Chapman appeared to be pulling a small weighted sled device with his right hip free of any difficulty. The 27-year-old alluded to spending the majority of the last four months working his way back from labrum surgery, which cut short his 2020 season. Chapman managed to churn out a .232/.276/.535 line with 21 extra-base hits (nine doubles, two triples, 10 home runs) across 152 plate appearances despite being incessantly bothered by hip pain, so there is naturally plenty of optimism for a resurgent campaign in 2021.

Chapman agreed to a one-year, $6.49 million deal with the Athletics on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
He underwent surgery to repair a torn right hip labrum in mid-September. Agent Scott Boras said in December that Chapman received clearance for increased activity and should be ready for spring training. That said, it's possible Chapman won't be performing at his very best early in the season as he works his way back.

Agent Scott Boras said Chapman (hip) received clearance for increased activity and and should be ready for the start of spring training, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old underwent surgery to address a torn right hip labrum in mid-September and was given a four-month recovery, and it appears he's progressing as planned. Chapman had a .232/.276/.353 slash line with 10 home runs, nine doubles and 25 RBI in 37 games last season and is poised to start at the hot corner again for the A's in 2021.

Chapman underwent successful surgery to repair a torn right hip labrum and has a four-month recovery timeline, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old finishes 2020 with a .232/.276/.535 slash line, 10 homers and 25 RBI in 37 games. If all goes well in his recovery, Chapman should be healthy for the start of spring training in February, though any minor setbacks could bring a delayed arrival to camp. Jake Lamb is likely to see the bulk of the time at third base for the A's since Chad Pinder (hamstring) is also sidelined.

Chapman (hip) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday and will undergo surgery to address a torn right hip labrum, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
EDGE Analysis
Chapman has been sidelined for the past seven games while dealing with right hip tendinitis, and he'll miss the remainder of the season as a result. The 27-year-old had started all but one of the Athletics' games prior to his injury, slashing .232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs and 25 RBI. Whether he'll be ready for spring training in 2021 remains to be seen. Seth Brown was recalled in a corresponding move, while Chad Pinder and Vimael Machin should see playing time at third base in Chapman's absence.
