Cain (elbow) will begin throwing from 45-60 feet next week on a schedule of throwing three times per week, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
In addition to having surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, Cain also had a bone spur taken out of his right ankle in September. He may be on the same schedule as the Giants' other starting pitchers once spring training begins in February if he can move through his throwing program without a setback. Cain posted an ERA above 4.00 for the second straight year in 2014, struggling with a career-high 1.251 WHIP over 90.1 innings (15 starts) before injuries ended his season prematurely.

Cain underwent surgery Saturday to remove a bone spur in his right ankle.
Cain, who saw his season cut short due to an elbow injury, is expected to need about two months to recover from the ankle procedure. He enters the offseason less than totally healthy, but he should have plenty of time to get back to 100 percent by the time spring training rolls around.

Cain (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day DL.
The move is merely procedural, as Cain is already considered out for the season after undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery. His transfer makes extra room on the Giants' 40-man roster for another round of September call-ups.

Cain (elbow) underwent successful surgery Monday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips and clean up bone spurs was recommended by three different doctors who examined Cain's elbow, and he got the surgery out of the way Monday. The right-hander now faces a three-month rehabilitation process, so he should, in theory, be back at full strength well ahead of spring training. Cain said he's been pitching with the bone chips for 10 years, but it's unrealistic to think the procedure will cure all of his woes.

Matt Cain has scheduled a visit with Dr. James Andrews.
That's usually not good news. Cain has failed to make any progress in his rehabilitation from right elbow inflammation and may now be facing surgery. The right-hander could be done for the year no matter what.

Matt Cain has not been making progress in his early rehabilitation from an elbow injury.
Cain has been out with right elbow inflammation since July 11 and there's no timetable for his return. He will get another round of tests done next week. It's possible that the right-hander won't return this season -- and that's a big part of the reason why the Giants were so aggressive in trading for Jake Peavy.

Matt Cain underwent an MRI which ruled any ligament damage in his right elbow.
That's good news, but Cain still felt soreness playing catch after he received a cortisone shot before the All-Star break, so the Giants have placed him on the disabled list. There's no clear timetable for his return.

Giants placed RHP Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 11, with right elbow inflammation.
Yusmeiro Petit will start in his place on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. Cain finished the first half of the 2014 season with a disappointing 2-7 record and 4.18 ERA in 90 1/3 innings. He will be eligible to return from the disabled list later this week, but the Giants haven't offered up an exact timetable.
