In addition to having surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, Cain also had a bone spur taken out of his right ankle in September. He may be on the same schedule as the Giants' other starting pitchers once spring training begins in February if he can move through his throwing program without a setback. Cain posted an ERA above 4.00 for the second straight year in 2014, struggling with a career-high 1.251 WHIP over 90.1 innings (15 starts) before injuries ended his season prematurely.

Matt Cain has not been making progress in his early rehabilitation from an elbow injury. Cain has been out with right elbow inflammation since July 11 and there's no timetable for his return. He will get another round of tests done next week. It's possible that the right-hander won't return this season -- and that's a big part of the reason why the Giants were so aggressive in trading for Jake Peavy.
