Make it six straight games with a hit for Semien, who homered off closer Andrew Miller in the ninth inning to draw the A's within one run. He's now hit two homers in July after not recording a single homer in the month of June. The 24-year-old is batting .300/.352/.450 against left-handed pitching but just .247/.291/.389 against right-handers.

Semien is out of the lineup Sunday against the Royals. Semien's bat seems to have gone cold again, as he's failed to register a hit in his last three starts. His much-maligned defense certainly won't keep him on the field when he's a void offensively, so manager Bob Melvin will give the young infielder a rest Sunday and hand shortstop duties over to Eric Sogard.

Semien is back in the lineup Wednesday against San Diego. After getting the day off Tuesday, Semien will bat second in the A's order Wednesday and play shortstop. He'll be facing Padres' right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne.
