Weaver threw mainly fastballs and changeups during his seven dominant innings against the Reds on Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver spent the spring trying to rework his curve while using more of a slider rather than a cutter, but he struggled through much of the Cactus League. Sunday's outing was the second straight in which he kept the curve on the shelf. He didn't need it or any of the breaking stuff, throwing 70 fastballs, 23 changeups and one slider. He spotted his mid-90s fastball and kept hitters off balance with the change. It's not the optimum recipe for starting pitchers to navigate around lineups three and four times per game over the course of a season, but it worked for this one day against this lineup.

Weaver (1-0) held the Reds scoreless, allowing one hit while striking out eight and walking one over seven innings in Sunday's victory over the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
The righty was incredible on Sunday, losing his no-hit bid in the seventh inning on a single from Eugenio Suarez. The 27-year-old threw 63 of his 94 pitches for strikes and had the Reds guessing all afternoon. His next opportunity to start comes on Saturday against the Nationals.

Weaver tossed 5.2 innings against Colorado on Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision.
EDGE Analysis
On the plus side, Weaver did not walk a batter and allowed only four hits. However, three of those hits left the park, leaving the right-hander with only a moderately successful outing. The fact that Weaver hung around 5.2 frames in the altitude of Colorado helps provide some optimism moving forward, though the veteran's eight homers allowed this spring suggests that the long ball may be a problem this season no matter where he pitches. Weaver will try to keep more balls in the park Sunday when he faces Cincinnati at home in his next scheduled start.

Weaver felt good about his strong finish to Thursday's outing in which he allowed seven runs and three home runs in 5.1 innings, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver gave up most of the damage in the first two innings before retiring 11 of 12 batters to end his outing. The right-hander may have been encouraged by the finish, but manager Torey Lovullo was less optimistic and expressed concern about the eight home runs allowed this spring. "I think the bottom line is when you're making middle-third mistakes to big-league hitters, they're going to put a good swing on the ball. It's the type of contact we want to avoid," Lovullo said. "The bottom line is he has to do a better job of pitching to the edges to avoid the long ball." Weaver logged an 8.59 ERA over 14.2 innings but had an encouraging 17 strikeouts and just three walks.

Weaver allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.1 innings in Thursday's spring game against Kansas City.
EDGE Analysis
After a promising Cactus League debut, Weaver has been less than impressive during his three subsequent outings and sports an 8.59 spring ERA. The right-hander surrendered three more home runs Thursday and has given up eight homers, four doubles and one triple over 14.2 spring innings. The strikeout potential makes him attractive, but Weaver may bring a lot of baggage.

Weaver allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out five over 4.1 innings in Saturday's spring game against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver threw all of his pitches with varying degrees of success. "That was the best I threw my changeup in a while. I couldn't land the curveball today, but it had good action. And some sliders had good action, as well," he told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Weaver gave up two more home runs Saturday and has permitted five over 9.1 spring innings.

Weaver allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over three innings in Tuesday's game against the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver was pleased with his breaking pitches but was unable to locate his fastball, which resulted in three home runs during his second spring outing, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. He ran his pitch count up to 54 (33 strikes) and pitched behind for much of the game. The right-hander eventually abandoned the windup in favor of pitching from the stretch.

Weaver allowed two hits over two scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Indians.
EDGE Analysis
Weaver got off to a rocky start, permitting singles to the first two batters, but he got a double-play grounder and retired the final five batters faced. The right-hander's bid for a bounce-back season got off to a promising start, but bigger challenges are down the road when he extends his innings and faces orders a second or third time. That was an issue for him in 2020 when he had a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 12 starts.

Weaver has focused on consistency of mechanics and reclaiming the slider he lost last season, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. "It's a monumental pitch," Weaver said. "In 2019, I had that. I had that consistently. I felt confident throwing that for strikes. For me, it was just easier to pitch. It opens up the fastball/changeup."
EDGE Analysis
In 2019, Weaver carved up lineups with four pitches and posted a 2.94 ERA over 12 starts in a season shortened by arm problems. His career took a sideways turn in 2020, when the ERA ballooned to 6.58, and the righty was reduced to throwing fastballs and changeups. Weaver is expected to take up a spot in the rotation in 2021.

Weaver signed a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday to avoid arbitration, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old had a 6.58 ERA and 1-9 record to lead MLB in losses last season, but he's now officially under contract for 2021. Weaver should have a tentative spot in the rotation to start spring training, but Arizona hope he can return to the form that delivered a 2.94 ERA in 2019.
