Severino pitched two-plus innings in a Grapefruit League game against Detroit on Monday, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter.

He then pitched a 1-2-3 second frame before walking Akil Baddoo to start the third, and Severino was charged with another run when Baddoo came around to score following the hurler's exit. It was far from an inspiring outing for Severino, though it would be unwise to read too much into a poor outing at the start of spring training. On a positive note, the fact that the right-hander was able to throw 45 pitches (30 of which were strikes) this early in the exhibition slate suggests that he is fully healthy entering 2023 after being limited by injuries in each of his previous four campaigns.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Severino is already in "elite shape" at the start of camp, James O'Connell of the New York Daily News reports.

Severino's health remains a big question mark for the Yankees, as the right-hander has pitched in only 26 games since 2018. He was excellent in the 19 regular-season starts he made last season, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB over 102 innings, but a lat injury cost him two months of the campaign. However, he's now further removed from his 2020 Tommy John surgery and should be able to pitch with few (if any) restrictions this season, assuming he stays healthy. Fantasy managers can't ignore Severino's lengthy injury history when deciding where to draft him, but given his electric arsenal and past successes, it's certainly feasible for him to rank as a top-15 starting pitcher by season's end.

The right-hander missed two months with a lat injury but was reliable when healthy, so it's not a major surprise to see the Yankees picking up the option.

Severino tossed 5.1 innings and took the loss Thursday during Game 2 of the ALCS, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six.

A devastating three-run homer by Alex Bregman with two outs in the third was enough for the Astros to win Game 2 in Houston. Severino was able to battle the tough Houston lineup all night, but the one mistake to Bregman put a damper on his performance. He managed to work into the sixth but was pulled for Jonathan Loaisiga after a one-out single by Kyle Tucker. The 28-year-old has now surrendered six runs in 11 innings during the postseason while striking out 12.

Severino (7-3) got the win after he tossed seven no-hit innings, allowing one walk while striking out seven batters in Monday's win over the Rangers.

Severino was in full command Monday, keeping the Rangers out of the hit column for seven frames. The only baserunner he allowed in the contest was a third-inning walk to Josh Smith. Severino has now produced a 1.69 ERA and 0.63 WHIP with 17 strikeouts over 17 innings in three starts since returning from the 60-day injured list Sept. 21. If he makes another start this season, it will come in the playoffs.

Severino didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four.

EDGE Analysis

The right-hander ran up his pitch count and left the game after 76 pitches (49 strikes) in his second start since coming off the IL. Severino's workload was encouraging, even if his efficiency wasn't, and he figures to be fully stretched out for his final start of the regular season this weekend against the Orioles. Since returning to action, Severino has a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through nine innings.

Severino (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over five innings with six strikeouts against the Pirates.

EDGE Analysis

Severino looked good in his return from the injured list as had little trouble with the Pittsburgh lineup. He needed just 64 pitches to hold the opposition to three baserunners through five innings. The Yankees were up 6-1 when manager Aaron Boone took Severino out of the game, so it is possible they would have let him go longer if the game were more competitive. He is tentatively scheduled to face off against Toronto next week.

Severino (lat) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Pirates.

The 28-year-old tossed 57 pitches in that rehab start, so the Yankees could keep him around the 70-to-80-pitch range when he steps back into the big-league rotation this week.
