Smith was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will take the roster spot of Darwinzon Hernandez, who was sent to Double-A Portland following his spot start Tuesday, though it remains to be seen whether the right-hander will initially slot into the bullpen or starting rotation. The Red Sox are in need of a fifth starter Sunday, and Smith is a candidate to fill that role after making a spot start for Boston last weekend (allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in four innings against the Rays). Brian Johnson (elbow) is also an option to start for the Red Sox on Sunday.

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following his spot start in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Rays.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox required a six-man rotation last week due to the twin bill, resulting in Smith moving up to the big club as the 26th man for the doubleheader. Smith ended up taking the loss after serving up four runs on seven hits and one walk in four innings, with Boston apparently deeming him unworthy of another turn in the rotation. After the Red Sox sent the struggling Ryan Weber back to Triple-A a couple days prior to Smith's demotion, Double-A Portland pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez now looks like the leading candidate to join the big-league rotation the next time a fifth starter is needed Tuesday against the Rangers.

Smith (0-2) gave up four runs over four innings and was saddled with the loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on Saturday. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three.
EDGE Analysis
Smith gave up all four runs in the second inning, with most of the damage coming from a Travis d'Arnaud three-run homer. The 31-year-old was making his first start of the season although he had made three prior relief appearances. He now holds a 6.35 ERA and 1.59 WHIP along with a 9:3 K:BB.

Smith was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket prior to his start Saturday in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Rays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 31-year-old journeyman has a 4.23 FIP and 41:10 K:BB in 31 innings with Pawtucket. In his lone MLB start this year, he gave up four runs in 3.1 innings against the Orioles. He was called up as the 26th man and will likely be sent back to Triple-A after this start.

Smith has been confirmed as the starter for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will serve as a starter during his upcoming stint in the big leagues, and he figures to be sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket following his outing, assuming he's being brought up as the 26th man. David Price is set to start the nightcap.

Smith will be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket for Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith worked as both a starter and a reliever during his stint with the Red Sox in May and allowed four runs on eight hits across 7.1 innings. The 31-year-old could make a quick return to Pawtucket after Saturday's twin bill, assuming he's set to serve as the 26th man.

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith was called up April 26 and made four appearances with the big-league club, managing a 4.91 ERA with six strikeouts across 7.1 innings. His demotion will open a roster spot for David Price (elbow) to be activated for Monday's start.

Smith is expected to be available in relief Saturday against the Astros with the Red Sox naming Hector Velazquez the starter for the contest, NESN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith made a spot start for the Red Sox back on May 6, but his lone appearance since then came in relief last weekend against the Mariners. He worked behind Velazquez in that game and could do so again Saturday with Velazquez having maxed out at only 63 pitches this season. The Red Sox currently have only four healthy starters in their rotation, but it doesn't look like Smith will have an opportunity to fill out the fifth spot with David Price (elbow) slated to return from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Smith (0-1) took the loss against the Orioles on Monday, giving up four earned runs on five hits over 3.1 innings in a 4-1 defeat for the Red Sox. He struck out three and walked two.
EDGE Analysis
Making his first start of the season, Smith was hit with the loss against the Orioles after giving up a second-inning grand slam to Jonathan Villar that accounted for all the runs against him. It remains to be seen if the Red Sox will keep him up for another start, but given this uninspiring showing and his 5.26 career ERA at the big-league level, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Smith head back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Smith has been named the starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Orioles, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith will get the nod for Monday's series opener after his last scheduled start was postponed due to weather. He's made one other appearance this season for Boston, striking out one over a scoreless inning Friday against the White Sox.
