Smith was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.

Smith was one of three arms called up on Sunday to provide the Reds with bullpen depth. Through eight starts at Louisville, the right-hander owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.

Smith surrendered six hits, four earned runs and five walks over five innings in a 4-1 loss to the Cubs on Tuesday. He struck out seven.

EDGE Analysis

The 28-year-old rookie notched the highest strikeout total of his brief career, but also handed out five free passes, a key factor in Smith totaling 101 pitches over only five frames. Smith has turned in erratic performances over eight appearances this season, and his 1.95 WHIP speaks to the extent of his control problems. He will potentially get one more opportunity to right the ship in the Reds' final game of the 2015 campaign.

Smith gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings against the Mets on Thursday. He struck out five and didn't factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

This was by far the best start among the five turns Smith has taken in his young MLB career, which isn't saying much -- the 28-year-old righty came in with a WHIP close to 2.00 and more walks than strikeouts, so this outing seems easier to credit to the Mets' slumping offense than it to a sudden improvement by Smith. He's on schedule to start against the Cubs next week.

Smith is scheduled to start for the Reds on Saturday in Milwaukee.

EDGE Analysis

Kevyius Sampson was previously scheduled to start, but he'll either be shut down or work in relief as part of an effort to limit his inning. Smith has posted a 7.36 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over five appearances (14.2 innings) with the Reds this season. It's entirely possible that he'll be limited to just three or four innings in Saturday's start after he pitched just one-third of an inning last time out Sept. 13.

Smith was recalled from Double-A Pensacola on Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

With rosters now expanded, Smith will return to Cincinnati, where he's appeared in only three games on the season. Smith started all three of those games and struggled to a 7.30 ERA, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits over 12.1 combined innings.
