Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Indians have had "serious discussions" with free agent infielder Jose Lopez. Lopez, 28, batted just .216/.245/.372 with eight home runs, 21 RBI and a .617 OPS over 242 plate appearances this past season between the Rockies and Marlins. The Indians are looking for a right-handed bat to help balance their lefty-heavy lineup, but Lopez and his .294 career on-base percentage hardly qualifies as an improvement.

Jose Lopez broke up Cliff Lee's shutout bid with a solo shot in the ninth inning of Thursday's extra innings loss to the Phillies. Lee had Lopez at 0-2 before the veteran slugged one into the left-field seats. He has actually gone deep in three of his last five starts for the Marlins and has six homers over 91 at-bats for them this season.

Marlins purchased the contract of INF Jose Lopez from Triple-A New Orleans. Lopez managed just three hits in 29 at-bats earlier this season with the Marlins and wasn't much better in his time with the Rockies. He could get some starts at second base with Omar Infante out.

Just 27, Lopez will find another gig somewhere, but his play has dropped off rapidly the last couple seasons.
